Dear Editor: I'm interested in your two articles regarding seat belts in school bus- es. 1. Can you picture a bus driver with a load of children all fastened into their seats by seat belts? There's bound to be panic among them if involved in an accident and in their haste cannot get the belt buckle to open. ! 2.. The bus driver must assist the children and try to get them to safety, especially in the junior grades. That would be an enormous task - most of them cry- ing and screaming. I do not envy the bus driver. 3. I agree with better seat backs. 4. Children could buckle on the belts as instructed and advised by the driver but will they keep them on? 5. When the driver returns to his station, a dollar to a doughnut, many students would release the buckles. 6. What about the possibilities of cutting the belts, sticking gum or some substance into the buckles. One never knows! 7. There aren't belts on travelling buses. 8. I can't see that the recommendations for belts are justifiable. True, they have their good or bad points but they add more responsi- bilities to a driver. 9. So we come to the conclusion, "Are Seat Belts the Answer?" There will have to be more research on this problem before acting on a decision of belts in school buses. Toivo Hirt evened the score and Rick Sitko scored the winner for the Chargers at 4:21 of the second period. There were only two penalties assessed, one to each team.
