Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, January 18, 1984, page 15 (classified marketplace ° Office Hours: Tuesday-Friday 9:00-12:00 1:00-5:00 ' DEADLINE: FRIDAY NOON Mail your advertisement to P.O. Box 579, Terrace Bay, or bring it to our office at Simcoe Plaza Voltage test set for January 17th Ontario Hydro will conduct. a_ routine voltage reduction test on Tuesday, January 17th. Voltage on the Ontario electrical system will be reduced by 5 per cent for two one-hour periods: from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. EST and from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. EST For most customers, the effects of the reduction will be imperceptible. The purpose of the test is to ensure that in an emergency involving, for example, the breakdown of a large generating unit, Hydro could prevent power interruptions. A 5 per cent voltage reduction is equivalent to more than 500,000 kilowatts, enough to meet the needs of more than 180,000 homes. The tests are carried out each year in the months of January and July. The presses are rolling The presses of the WaWartra News will con- tinue rolling to keep the Native people in north- ern Ontario informed, said the Hon. Susan Fish, Ontario's Minister of Citizenship and Cul- ture. The minister was an- nouncing a $25,000 grant to the WaWaTa Native Communica- tions Society to offset the costs of publishing a newspaper. The WaWatTa News is a bilingual newspaper that is published-month- ly and provides coverage of the communities in the Grand Council Treaty #9 area in north- ern Ontario. ~ The WaWatla News is plan- ning to hire a Cree translator so the paper may be written in three languages. The WaWaTa News keeps the Indian people informed about - their community and assess- es general news from their own perspective and besides English, the paper is also published in syllabics, a form of Indian alphabet, which helps provide cultural continuity and preserve the Native heritage. The WaWaTa Native Communications So- ciety provides a variety of services and program- ming for the 20,000 In- dians on the reserves in the Treaty #9 area. Be- sides a monthly news- paper, the society also provides a trail radio programme for trappers in outlying communi- ties, assistance to local radio stations, and translation services. The society has technical and radio training pro- grammes and is making efforts to hire an addi- tional typesetter. The grant will be ad- ministered by the min- istry's Native Commun- ity Branch. Black bear management Ontario's largest pro- vincial conservation organization, The On- tario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (O.F.A.H.) has just presented a 15-page brief to the Honourable Alan Pope, Ontario Minister of Natural Resources. In it, the 40,000 members sportsmen's group ex- presses its recommenda- tions on the future of bear management in the province. Many of the Federa- tion's specific recommen- dations involve educa- tion. It wants the general public better informed on the edibility of bear meat, the risks involved in en- counters with bears, and the biology of the animals. The Federation sup- ports the current legal means of hunting bear and the present season structures. Throughout the O.F.A.H. brief, appear the words "education", ""ecological" and **biological", three key elements in any resource management pro- gramme. The Federation has promoted each for over 55 years. Copies of the O.F.A.H. brief on Black Bear management are available from the On- tario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, Box 28, Peterborough, Ontario, K9J 6Y5; at the cost of $2.00 for each 'copy.
