The provincial police force was founded in 1909. From the original 45 men, it has expand- ed to its present-day complement of 5,200 po- lice officers and civili- an support staff. The O.P.P. polices al- most one million square kilometres in Ontario as it has a "residual" po- licing responsibility: that is, it polices all of those areas which do not have an established police force. O.P.P. Commis- sioner Archie Fergus- on said, "The O.P.P. has been an important element in the develop- ment of this province during the 20th century. The O.P.P. is present in almost 200 communi- ties and many of the anniversary activities planned will involve people in the communi- ties we police." Com- missioner Ferguson said that one of the first signs of the 7Sth anniver- sary will be bright coloured decals dis- played on O.P.P. cruis- ers. The decals will also be placed on doors lead- ing into O.P.P. build- ings. An underlying theme of the anniversary will be the provincial: police force's preparation for the years leading up to the hundredth anniver- sary in the year 2109. Prominent in the 7Sth. birthday celebrations will be the O.P.P. Pipes and Drums Band and the Golden Helmets Motorcycle Precision Team. They will be visit- | ing fairs and parades all over the province. Included in the anni- versary plans is publica- tion of a book on the history of the O.P.P. It is expected that this book will become a valued addition to many private and public collections.
