They called this new sport Ringette, and designed it so that injuries and risks would be reduced. With no body checking allow- ed, Ringette displays a quickness and _ versa- tility not common to all team sports. As a result, thousands of females, and some males, have enjoyed their participa- tion. Why Ringette? There are many rea- sons why youngsters be- come involved in Ringette. The code of the game is quite sim- ple and reflects one of the most important char- acteristics of the sport: consideration of the child. Ringette: Code of the Game: 1) To ensure the healthy well-being of every person involved in the sport. 2) To ensure mass participation and the op- portunity for all to play in a fun atmosphere. 3) To maintain the principle of no intention- al body contact. 4) To give the play- 'ers an option of recrea- tional or high level tour- nament play. 5) To maintain a high standard of safety while retaining a low cost of participation. Basic Principles for Sport : All sports should be concerned about sever- al basic principles in order to meet the needs of participants. These are: : © offering a choice of levels of play to suit all participants; ® encouraging co- operation and teamwork among players; ¢ emphasis on skill development in the early stages; i © promotion of fair play in a fun at- mosphere; © opportunity to learn self-discipline, or- ganization and responsi- bility; ¢ ensuring a high stan- "dard of safety; e achieving a balance between the values of winning and losing; e keeping the game interesting and exciting. Several reasons why children dislike sports are: lack of participa- tion; susceptibility to in- jury; dislike for losing and no choice of posi- tion. To be successful as a sport, organizers must consider these princi- ples and need commit- tees to look at improve- ments in the game to meet participants' needs more closely. Parent education programmes are needed to explain the game and its princi- ples in programmes (eg. coaching and officiating clinics, player schools), must promote the sport's philosophy so that everyone under- stands the nature of the game. It is only by consider- ing the needs of the child that we can con- tinue to see increased involvement in sport for the benefit of the partici- pant and a decreased dropout rate. In Ringette, the above principles are con- stantly being reviewed to improve the game for the participants. It is hoped that other sports will also take on this basic responsibility. * WIN FUN ERAL a FREE YEAR'S SUBSCRIPTION to the Terrace Bay - Schreiber "NEWS" The "NEWS" will be featuring a special "Christmas Cooking" section just in time for Christmas.
