f Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, November 16, 1983, page 13 $1.3 Million in NORDA funds approved for development of north A total of over $1.3 million has been approv- ed for 56 projects under the federal-provincial Northern Ontario Rural Development Agreement (NORDA). The announcement was made by the Hon. Ed Lumley, the federal Minister of Industry, Trade and Commerce, and of Regional Eco- nomic Expansion; and by the Hon. Leo Bernier, the Ontario Minister of Northern Affairs. Of the 56 projects, 16 are for assistance to in- dustries and for job- creation, 26 for agricul- tural development (16 cover land-improve- ment), one is a mining study, and 13 are for tourism development. Murray Bros. Lumber Co. Ltd. of Barry's Bay has been offered $100,000 towards the purchase of machinery and equipment for its mill at Madawaska, in the Nipissing district south of Algonquin Park. The project, esti- mated to cost $481,500, will enable the company to mill low-grade small- diameter poplar and white birth logs; over the next five years 40 new jobs are expected. To provide power for the Madawaska mill, Murray Bros. has also been offered $81,000, half the calculated cost, of constructing a small hydro-electric power station near the mill. Three quarters of the estimated cost of. con- structing an 800-foot ex- tension of a 6-inch watermain across High- way 11 has been approv- ed for the Town of Smooth Rock Falls to en- able a new plant, Breton Shingle Mill, to start production. The offer is for $49,500, which in- cludes a 10 per cent contingency allowance. Similarly, a contri- bution of $29,300 has been approved for the Township of Chapleau covering a 450-foot watermain extension in the Town of Chapleau, to serve a new plant, Woodland Babes Ltd., that will manufacture dolls for the internation- al market. The full cost of the watermain is esti- mated at $35,514. At Cache Bay, near Sturgeon Falls, $100,000 has been approved to- wards assistance to Ray's. Septic Ser- vices Ltd. for the pur- chase of a building and equipment to produce crushed stone for the building and construct- ion trades. The full cost of the venture is esti- mated at $228,000; five existing jobs will be secured, and six new jobs are expected when production begins. Midway Lumber Mills Ltd. of Thessalon (Al- goma District) has been offered $100,000 to- wards the purchase of a new kiln. The full cost is calculated at $307,000; - during the first year 28 jobs are expected, with 33 more by year three. Weather Wear Inc. has been. offered $100,000 towards re- activating the former Arctic Cat garment plant at Rainy River; the full cost is estimated at $317,000 to buy the property and machinery, and to carry out the ne- cessary renovations. Fifty-five jobs are ex- pected when the plant reopens, and 25 more by year five. Towards expanding its wood-cutting oper- ation at Warren (be- tween Sturgeon Falls and Sudbury), Ornum Forest Harvesters has been offered $68,566, half the estimated cost of purchasing trucks and loading equipment. Six new jobs are expected, growing to eight within five years. Goulard Lumber of Sturgeon Falls has been offered $60,000 to- wards buying two kilns, a building in which to house them, and a fork- lift truck. The total cost is calculated at $306,400, and 10 new jobs are expected over the next three years. An explosives manu- facturer at Kirkland Lake has been offered $53,850, half the esti- mated cost of buying a bulk-storage silo, three special transporters and other equipment. Nordex Explosives Ltd. plans to reduce its sea- sonal layoffs and to op- erate continuously as a result of this expansion. Porta-Bote Canada Ltd. of Atikokan has been offered $44,000 to- wards the estimated $139,000 cost of reno- vating a leased building and buying equipment to manufacture folding polypropylene boats un- der license. Five jobs are expected during the first year, increasing to 12 in five years. To buy and renovate a building and to purchase equipment, Glen Draper Bakery has been offer- ed $30,000 of the cal- culated $80,000 cost of establishing a bakery in Mattawa (Nipissing dist- rict). Five jobs are ex- pected when the bakery opens, and five more later. Stone Studio Siku of Parry Sound has been offered $30,000, half the estimated cost of adding equipment and expand- ing its workshop. The studio turns out carvings in soapstone and en- gracings in marble, granite and glass. Four new jobs are expected. Truck caps will be a new product line for New Liskeard's Mid- Canada Fibreglass Ltd. which now suffers sea- sonal slowdowns in its sale of marine products. It has been offered $15,000, towards the estimated $31,250 cost of purchasing the equip- ment needed for the new line. Mills Refrigeration of Iroquois Falls (Coch- rane district) has been offered $14,500 towards expanding its refriger- ation and air-condition- ing service. The full cost of the project is esti- mated at $40,350; three new jobs are expected. A company that will make custom-built doors, windows and similar items, has been offered $8,500, half the estimated machinery and equipment cost of the new plant in Mathe- son (Cochrane dist- rict). Two jobs are ex- pected. Guy Guillmette, the owner, will sell the products locally. Ten agricultural pro- jects are of particular interest: ; © $25,500 has been ap- proved for a demonstra- tion of a "round-bale"' silage system which uses plastic bags. J.D. Haldane of Moonbeam _ (Cochrane district) will manage the project, which is a more econo- mical means of provid- ing high-quality- forage for finishing beef cattle. © $17,920 has been ap- proved for a pasture- management technique for raising sheep. Randy Praeter of New Liskeard will operate the two- year experiment, which, if successful, could eventually help to dis- place the amount of lamb imported into On- tario. ¢ $17,000, half the esti- mated cost, has been offered to Gary Brohart of Harrow Township (near Sudbury) to open a bull-testing station for the area. Continuing tests will be done on 30 bulls to create top- quality breeding stock. © $12,650 has been ap- proved for the Rainy River Cattlemen's Assoc. to carry out a livestock management demonstration, under special supervision, to encourage area farmers to increase their beef production. © $5,000 has been of- fered to Glackmeyer Farms of Cochrane to erect barns for newborn calves and heifers to e $3,000 has been ap- proved for Yvan Chart- rand of New Liskeard to make modifications to a hay elevator that will lay paper under cut trefoil, prior to combing; the yield-per-acre of hay is expected to increase sig- nificantly. The full cost of the project is esti- mated at over $17,000. e $3,000, half the esti- mated cost, has been offered to Howard Stewart of Burk's Falls (Parry Sound district) to purchase weigh scales. The weighing of live- stock at birth, weaning and prior to sale will be part of a demonstra- tion of improved live- stock management. e $9,500, half the esti- mated cost, has been offered to Gilbert Labre of Blezard Valley (near Sudbury) to purchase equipment to package goats' milk for local sale. © $4,140, half the esti- mated cost of the equip- ment, has been offered to Francis Leveille of Kenabeek (Henwood Township, Timiskaming district) towards start- ing a seed-cleaning and drying facility to serve district farmers. e $15,000 has been ap- proved for a study to explore the feasibility of opening a farmers' market in Sault Ste. Marie. The funds will be managed by a local steering committee. Sixteen land-develop- ment projects for farm- ers have been approved, for $60,620. The pro- jects are in the dist- ricts of Algoma, Coch- rane, Nipissing, Rainy River and Timiskaming. In addition, $3,000 was added to the previously- approved amount of- fered for land develop- ment on the Manitou- lin Stocker Pasture at Gore Bay. The provincial Minis- try of Agriculture and Food provides the pro- vince's share of funds for NORDA agricultural projects, and is respon- sible for their imple- mentation.
