Birchwood Briefs... continued from page 7 up using whatever space that was left in the garden. We had 100"s. Next year we will take John's advice - have fewer plants, stronger growth and better yield. Sorry John, our first effort! So don't feel too badly about it. John will .be leaving soon for Ari- zona. Have a good win- ter from all of us at Birchwood. Mrs. Winter and Mrs. Henderson from Schrei- ber along with five of our residents, had a last sail in the Ushers boat for at least two years. John and Betty are working through CUSO, and how lucky can you get. They will be in the South Pacific for the next two years. Good Luck! ... we shall miss you both at Birchwood. We all enjoyed the two cribbage tourna- ments at the Legion, put on by Rolly Chase who invited us to parti-. cipate. The winners were Peter Plachotmuk, Lorrette Solly and Stewart Anderson. So, all you players start practising. You have to try and beat Birchwood if you can!!! Bowling begins on Wednesday, October 4th and every Wednes- day until May. All Seniors are welcome at the Rec Centre. We have a great time and scoring is done by our volunteers Pam Jones and Gi-Gi Dequanne. There is no charge in- volved, courtesy of the Rec Centre. Wednesday after- noons, we play bridge from 1:30-4 p.m. Every- one is welcome to join in either bridge or crib- bage. These card af- ternoons are just great and we enjoy the visits with our seniors from Schreiber. There is a good report as well as the challenge and we have some pretty good players. We enjoyed the trip to Neys with the Chimo Club - super day - won- derful weather - great food baskets - and good fun. Everyone enjoys this annual outing but this year the weather was with us, making it more enjoyable. We are raffling a Babies Quilt and a baby doll with three out- fits, which some little girl is just going to love for Christmas. Proceeds are going towards out- side shuffleboard and lawn bowling which is our project for next year. Pop in and see. our terrific salesmen, August or Hector, for your tickets. The draw will, be on the Ist of December which is a Thursday and also our afternoon Tea and Christmas Bazaar, with cakes and Christmas _ goodies this year. The Kinsmen are starting a residents kit- chen. We already have the stove and refriger- ator, so good things will be happening in our very own kitchen. 'Til next time - sign- ing off ... Terrace Bay-Schrelber News, Wednesday, October 5, 1983, page 9 anchor "Families are Forever" by PETER MONKS Of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints From one generation to the next, our priceless heritage is our good name and integrity, our desire to see our sons and daughters grow up and expand to new and greater horizons than we attained, and in turn, setting our gtandchildren good examples. To achieve greatness is not to get ahead of others, but to get ahead of ourselves. To every viewpoint there is an opposite. It is a fact that in a stew the scum comes to the top and the meat and vegetables go to the bottom. Conversely, the cream of the milk always rises to the top. So it is in life. There will be the good and righteous that rise to distinction and fame and those that rise to rule with blood and horror. So how can we change the world? We must start with ourselves, our families and our children. To build a name of honour means a life of discipline and service. To lead by example often seems to produce less results when by compulsion we can change the world, but our democracy and our freedom was won for us by generations of our forefathers who endured and struggled. We must start today by demonstrating our love for our families by going that extra mile, by denying ourselves our selfish desires and promoting those attributes that we see and admire in others who set us an example in their lives of selflessness and service. Our challenge - To build a better world, as in this quote -- "Your task, to build a better world," God said. Towne Cinema Terrace Bay 825-3771 Wed. 5, Thurs. 6, Fri. 7, Sat. 8 I answered, "How? The world is such a large, vast place, so complicated now. And I so small and useless am. There's nothing I can do."' But God in all his wisdom said, "'Just build a better you."'
