Terrace Bay Fire Dept. report by ROLLY MOQUIN Fire Chief During the month of July the Terrace Bay Fire Dept. had a quiet month with only two responses. On July 18th at 12:55 a.m. the Ter- race Bay Firefighters were called out to the mill to put out a chip re-claim fire and on July 21st at 4:29 p.m. a call was sent out to the Township Dump. Also the Terrace Bay Firefighters held their monthly drill, some pumping practice took place along with check- ing out a new piece of self-contained breathing apparatus. Remember do not hang oven mitts over your stove or range, as this is a potential fire hazard. Remember these tips: 1. Turn off heat, never leave your pan _ unat- tended. © 2. Smother fire with a tight fitting lid or use your fire extinguisher. 3. Do not use water on a grease fire. 4. Watch your 'clothing does not catch fire. 5. Never carry a burning an. In all fires, the first few minutes are vital. Keep calm, act quickly and remember; "'Fire, all it takes is your life." Propane cylinders inspections mandatory The Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations recently. issued a warning to all backyard chefs who cook with propane barbecues, stating that they should check to make sure that their propane cylinders are safe. Ontario's propane code requires that 20 Ib. and 40 = Ib. cylinders commonly used for barbecues and other camping appliances must be inspected at least every ten years. The date of manufacture or the most recent inspection is stamped on the raised collar that protects the cylinder valve. Propane filling attendants, who must hold a_ certificate issued by the Fuels Safety Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Rela- tions, have been reminded of. the importance of regular inspections: If an inspection is past due, or the cylinder has large dents, gouges or is badly corroded, it is illegal for the attendant to fill the cylinder. Inspections cost about $15.00 and include replacement of the pressure relief valve.
