Battle Island boasts of rocks, sand bars and dangerous waters and has in past years, taken the life of many vessels. On the far side of the: island, several feet below the surface, are the ruins of many boats - circumstances of the difficulty of navigating Lake Superior. So - the lighthouse does indeed serve a purpose. From Battle Island we made our way back to the mainland, past many more smaller islands, beside beautiful rock cuts, through 23 on established 'big fish spot' where 'hubby' and Yuris tried their hand with the rod and reel. 'Yuris headed the boat toward Nichol Island which lies snug to the mainland. He told us that the island has recently undergone' sub- division and that lots approximately one acre in size, are now being sold on the open market. Nichol Island is about 80 acres in size and was named after the Nichol family who still owns it plus some land on the mainland. The island is just another part of the Rossport paradise. From the. island, we motored back to Yuris' dock and from the droves of other fishing boats, pleasure craft and sail boats that were docked along the shore of Rossport, I was finally able to understand just' what brought them.all here. Yuris pointed out that he wasn't the only charter service that was available in Rossport. Also working out of the area (and has been for most of his life) is Ray Kenny - a semi-retired Rossportite who still workshop on _ FREEZING, = .Rossport home to for the summer (from. the sunny south) to cater to his old established. charter clients who faithfully come back to Ray for his expert zuiding services. Ray nad a party out on the jake the day that I was there - which was a big disappointment to me. I sincerely hope comes ' that I can feature Ray and his life around Rossport, in an upcoming "Profile".' From what I have: heard about Ray, I can hardly wait to talk . to him about his many years on the lake fishing, chartering and to chat about the way things have changed from back when he started his business. After leaving the boat, Yuris guided us bck to his coffee shop, which houses a: variety of goodies, everything from the Rossport Post Office to a rock shop. From, arcade games. to souvenirs. And from coffee to some of the best hand-smoked fish that I've had the pleasure of eating. (Just another side-line that Yuris dabbles in).° While snacking on smoked fish, Yuris pulled out a large quantity of photos from various decades - depicting the beauty of the area - the great hunting and fishing - and the abundance of 'trophy' catches of trout. Yuris is proud to be a part of Rossport and he fully intends to promote the area all that he can. He is one of many who believe that Rossport is more than a thing of beauty. The next time that you approach Rossport via highway. 17, stop a moment and reflect upon its uniqueness. And thanks Yuris, Ned and 'Herbie' for my introduction to Rossport. It certainly was a very memorble event. You can attend this 4 hour FREE JAMS, JELLIES & PICKLES! This course is offered by the Terrace Bay Recreation Department, in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture & Food and will be held on Wednesday, August 17 from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. in the Home Economics Room at ~* the High School.
