Schreiber fight card a success Schreiber's first box- ing card was a major success! A packed arena watched the hometown boys brawl their way to win the majority of bouts. Schreiber's big Stan Nesbitt in his second time out destroy- ed Hearst's touch heavyweight Mark Ri- chard. The veteran Hearst boxer took two standing eight counts after a barrage of Nes- bitt punches and the referee was forced to stop the bout. In a rough and tumble match Jamie Mackenzie of Schreiber and Hearst middle- weight Rolland Rou- celle slugged it out for three rounds with Mac- kenzie getting the deci- sion. The most outstand- ing boxer of the tourna- ment was Schreiber's Gerry Filane as he con- tinually rocked Thun- der Bay's Arthur Es- quiga and the referee wisely stopped . the match giving Filane the\ victory. Nipigon's Bob Bear- - man did his community proud and had the eye of the tiger as he out- fought undefeated Hearst heavyweight Henry Gagnon. Gagnon is a known fierce compe- titor and vows revenge in an eagerly expected future rematch. Schreiber's Rocky, Billy Mackenzie, with only 4 fights behind him, took on Thunder Bay's vet- eran Chuch Major with 170 plus fights and fought him to a draw, to make his match the most outstanding of the night. Schreiber's "Mar- velous"" Mario Vasiliu fought a tough, gruel- ling bout, but lost a very close split decision to experienced Thunder Bay's Russ "Holly- wood" Crossley. In only four months in boxing Mario displayed ex- cellent boxing skills and earned the _ special award for the most im- proved boxer. John Carangi fought Marty Rageliak from Thunder Bay. John fought in his first fight with a sore hand and was doing well until a bleeding nose forced the fight to be stopped by ring doctor Dr. Mc- Ausland. The Thunder Bay fighter got the nod. Ring girls Diane Vasi- liu, Candance Camp- bell and Pam Vasiliu were the card girls and I am sure everyone will agree that they had the tools to do the job well and did. The whole affair was a major success and the Schreiber club looks for- ward to holding another match in the near fu- ture. The Schreiber Box- ing Club now travels to Sault Ste. Marie to chal- lenge that veteran club, residing there. The Schreiber Club encourages anyone wishing to box to come forward and try it, or contact Kevin Cocks 824-2107. 2 Heart Fund help your Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, July 20, 1983, page 3 TERRACE BAY!
