Making paper is an art that began more than 1,000 years ago. It was in 105 A.D. that a Chi- nese priest, Tsai-Lun, used the first real paper, made from linen fibres, to inscribe ancient prayers. Prior to that the Egyptians had used the unrolled stem of the papyrus reed, which growns abundantly by the Nile. And even be- fore that the Greeks used either earthen- ware tablets, palm leaves, the bark of trees or even thin sheets of lead to record important events. The art of 'paper- making was brought to the Western world by the Arabs. Long cara- vans crossed the Middle East and North Africa carrying with them the culture of the ancient world. this was brought to Europe as much by the Moors in Spain as by the Crusaders. The recipe for making paper was taken -to France by three men who had escaped from Arab prisons. It was during the 11th century that rag-paper was first produced. A gradual process of tech- nical improvements led to rag-paper finally re- placing both papyrus and parchment (pro- duced from animal skins) as a writing medi- um. By the 17th century, paper was available in various qualities, suit- able for a range of uses. Wallpaper today, with its purely decorative use, had very different beginnings It's origins stem from the Middle Ages when popular icons, called "domin- os," representing the Almighty and the saints, were stuck into the walls of lower-class dwellings in Western Europe. There they performed a double-function, ser- ving as both a talisman against bad luck and a covering for the cracks and crevices in the wall itself. The first reference to flocked wallpaper comes from a technical descrip- tion dated 1470 and found in the Monastery of St. Catherine in Nur- emberg, Germany. Of course we are all familar with Victorian wallpapers featuring roses and cupids, often considered the golden age of wallpaper. Today we have every conceivable type;. from metallic to bamboo, scenes from mountain lakes to cool forests. Wallpaper is an ancient art which has come a long way from its hum- ble beginnings!
