Foulds Rink wins Ladies Bonspiel Thirty-two rinks and over 130 curlers com- peted at the Terrace Bay Curling Club on Feb- ruary 25th and 26th in the twenty-eighth Annual Ladies Bon- spiel. Organizer Anne La- tour said that the Bon- spiel was one of the largest and most suc- cessful that the Ter- race Bay Club has ever hosted. "We had 32 rinks and 17 of them were from outside. We even had a team from Marathon that wanted to play but they entered too late and we had no room." Latour said that most of the credit for the success of the annual event should go to the organizers, including Terrace parking The Terrace Bay Council has decided to take action to make it easier for handicapped people to get around town. Rod Thompson ap- peared before the Coun- cil at its regular meet- ing on Monday, Febru- ary 28 and spoke on the need for facilities for the handicapped. Thomp- son suggested that spe- cial parking be created at the Recreation Cen- tre and on Simcoe Plaza and that additional light- Joyce Gilmour, Heather Vandergraf and Pat: Commisso. "Joyce Gil- mour was just 'a great worker. She needs a pat on the back. Heather Vandergraf scrounged for all the little prizes and Pat Commisso was there whenever we needed her. Rea Beau- lieu did the Draw and did a terrific job."' The Bonspiel - started at 4:00 p.m. Friday and finished at 5:30 on Sat- urday with the presenta- tion of awards. The Bon- spiel schedule included a banquet with Leon Theriault cutting the prime rib in his white chef's hat and white gloves and with the rest of the meal provided by the local women. "We had some good curling, and a lovely skit or- ganized by Porter and Larocque at the ban- quet. The Costume Jud- ging went to a Rink from Red Rock." Helen Fould's rink from Red Rock won the 'A' event with Mary Hale's Terrace Bay rink as runner-up. Mary's rink consisted of herself as skip, Maria Her- mes as third, Marg Chalmers as second and Marily Chisholm as lead. Joan Macdonald's Red Rock rink was third in the "A" event and Jackie Miller's Schreib- er rink came in fourth. The 'B' event was won by Audrey Morgan's Schreiber rink and saw an especially skillful final rock thrown by' Audrey in her last game on Saturday after- noon. The Langtree rink of Kakabeka Falls took second place in the 'B' 'event with Terrace Bay's Mary Ann Mc- Dougall coming in third and Charmaine Lavallee also taking fourth place for Terrace Bay. Julie Randa's rink took first place in the 'C' event with a team that included Dianne Caron third, Cheryl Fralick, second, and Marcie Cole lead. The Sahron Laver- dure rink from Red Rock took second place and Barb Hopper's rink took third with Steffie Dor- man's rink securing fourth place. I have raised your point about parking with the Chief of Police. We have already received a memo from the Min- ister of Transportation and Communications, the Hon. James Snow, strongly recommending the adoption of By-laws establishing special parking spots for the handicapped. The Chief will be preparing draft by-laws for us. I want to thank you Rod, and we will get the parking by- laws underway tomor- " row. Mr. Thompson replied that, "I'm sure some people will be up- set if you take two spaces in a heavily used parking area." Council- lor Ollie Chapman said that she recognized that it might not be a univer- sally popular move but said, "I see no reason why there couldn't be two parking spots put there for the handicap- ped." Eva Gordon, new Kinette Life Member with her husband Alec who is a Life Member of the Schreiber Kinsmen. 36 Years of service marked by Schreiber Kinettes On February 14th a ~ Eva joined the Kinette dinner was held in honour of Eva Gordon welcoming her back into the Schreiber Kinette Club with a Life Mem- bership. Eva is the first Kinette to receive this award in the Thunder Bay Area. The Elspeth Rogers Life Membership is new to Kinette Clubs. The Award is named after the wife of the Founder of Kinsmen, Hal Rogers. To be worthy of this award one must be a member of the Kinettes for a minimum of 7 years and have given service beyond that expected of any Kinette. The choice of a recipient for this award is determined by a committee of 3 mem- bers with at least 7 years active membership each and then agreed upon by the entire Kinette Club. We feel that Eva Gord- on is truly a deserving member of this award. Club of Schreiber on June 13, 1947. She has held all offices and chaired numerous pro- jects in the commun- ity. A surprise pot-luck dinner was held at the home of Peter and Mary Speziale. The room was beautifully decorated for the occasion with old photographs, hearts, cu- pids and valentines. Thanks, Mary, for the effective display. Over SO former and present Kinsmen and Kinettes attended this special event. Among the invited guests were Zone Kinette Co-ordina- tor, Leanne Murphy and Zone Secretary Tim Waite (both of Thunder Bay); Eva's daughter Bonnie and husband Don (Thunder Bay) and Eva's son Clyde and wife Elena of Schreiber. Eva was presented with a corsage by Kinette President Anne Miller; her Life Mem- bership Pin by Chair- person Edythe Cos- grove and her Life Mem- bership Plaque by Zone Co-ordinator Leanne and Zone Secretary Tim. Congratulatory let- ters were read from Na- tional President Bing Runquist and National Kinette Co-ordinator Glenda Cutforth both of Calgary. Letters were also read from Eva's sons Bruce of Coquit- lam, B.C. and Jack of Thornhill, Ontario who could not be in attend- ance. Eva was unaware un- til the last moment that she was to be the recipi- ent of this award. Her total surprise left not a dry eye in the room. Eva is an asset to the Schreiber Kinettes and is appreciated by all for her wisdom and wit. Congratulations are extended to our new Life Member, Eva Gordon.
