OPP Report OPP Commissioner James Erskine today is- sued a warning about the conditions of ice on lakes and rivers in On- tario. Seven persons have lost their lives in a nine-day period be- tween February 12 and February 20 in differ- ent types of accidents. The deaths resulted from snowmobiles or vehicles breaking through the ice. One tragic case involved a five-year-old girl who ventured out on ice near her home. Because of the mild winter, the ice has not reached its normal thick- ness and has deteriorat- ed earlier than usual. Many rivers now have open stretches of water or only:a thin skin of ice becauge running water has efoded the ice from underneath. Thé. tragic loss of life pronipted Commissioner Erskine to issue this. warning: "No_ one should go out on frozen rivers or lakes unless they have made certain that local conditions are safe." Evén larger lakes have. developed press- ure cracks and some cars .belonging to ice fishermen have gone through the ice. This has caused problems on Lake Erie where fisher- men were reported adrift on ice floes and had to be rescued by helicopters.
