Ist Annual No Contact Hockey Tournament This coming week- end, February Sth and 6th, eight teams will be participating in the ist Annual No Contact Hockey Tournament, at the Terrace Bay Mem- orial Arena. The satellite was carried in the Shuttle's cargo bay and launched into an orbit 35,887 kilo- metres above the earth's surface. The satellite cost $30 million to build and was constructed by Hughes Aircraft in California with the co-operation of Spar Aerospace in To- ronto. The actual flight on the Shuttle cost $10 million. The six metre high communications satellite has been des- cribed as looking like a chrome garbage can - with its lid open. Anik is the first of three of the new generation of Cana- dian satellites going into space. Anik C2 is plan- ned to be launched in April and Anik C1 is planned for 1984. The new satellites are considerably stronger in signal than their pre- decessors. The stronger signals can be received The tournament be- gins Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and continues until 10:00 p.m. On. Sunday the action begins at 8:00 a.m. The consolation fi- nal is scheduled for 12:00 noon on Sunday. The Championship final is scheduled for 2:00 by ordinary roof-top re- ception dishes if the individual buyer wants to pay several thousand dollars to purchase one. According to Larken Keewin, the president of the National Research Council, Anik C3 is the most powerful domestic communications pack- age ever placed in space. Anik is capable of handling 32 colour tele- vision broadcasts and more than 21,000 voice and data communica- tions simultaneously. "It is no accident that this is the most advanc- ed non-military satellite of its type in, or above, the world. This is ele- gant technology. It is also a paying proposi- tion.
