SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell Associate Sports Editor CHRISTMAS came early for the Ottawa .67's, in fact they found Santa Claus right here at the Civic Auditorium on Saturday night. Actually, it's perhaps a little harsh to tie in the untimely date of the defeat, because to give the Ottawa youngsters full credit, they deserved their win. They battled tooth - and - nail from start to finish, didn't show much class or finesse perhaps, but they had the spirit. They out-hustled and uit-checked the Generals, they had the greater desire and in the final period, it paid off with the tying and win- ning goals -- at a time when the Generals, if they had showed more will-to-win, they would have taken over. NO DOUBT, the absence of Fred O'Donnell and Dale Tal- lon was felt keenly, especial- ly on the Oshawa attack. Brian Morenz continued with his determined play and was rewarded by getting both goals for the Generals. But Osh- awa's weakness was not merely confined to poor pass- ing, poor combination and wretched shooting -- the de- fence was badly off form. They failed to clear and they failed to cover up, a couple of duties which are entirely the responsibility of the rear- guard, when the pressure is on. You'd think the Ottawa 67's had just won the Memor- ial Cup, the way they jumped for joy, at the final horn. Ac- tually, it was their second win of the schedule and two points that probably will not help them greatly, except for morale -- but the loss of those Same two points could be a margin which Generals now have to offset with an upset lwin over one of the top teams, in order to stay in the running for a playoff berth. AN OSHAWA RINK of schoolboy curlers almost pull- ed off one of the big upsets of the early season, in Division- al playdowns, here in Oshawa on Saturday. Five area schools were represented, in- cluding Barry Timbers' rink from. Uxbridge Secondary 1, last year's Ontario ionship and Canadian Doug Mark- ham-District High School pull- ed off a surprise 6-5 win over the heavily-favored Timbers' representatives. rink from finals Lawrie's foursome. But then along came Don Ruddy and his O'Neill Collegiate rink and forced Markham to an extra end, before losing the final match 7-6 JUNIOR 'A' schedule ac- tion tonight finds our Generals visiting the Canadiens at Montreal Forum and _ other games carded call for Peter- borough Petes at London and St. Catharines visiting Marl- boros. Generals would like to "make up" with a win ,to- night in Montreal but beating the strong Canadiens team on their home ice is a feat that few teams will perform this season. Bill Prentice, who along with Mike Keenan, Gary Bradley and Frank Sawyer, was .among the Lakeshore Junior 'B' League All-Stars slated to face the Junior 'B' Don Byes, in the All Star game in the Liftlock City to night, has gone to Montreal with the Generals: They left at 9:52 this morning, by train. Ron Webb will take Bill's place at Peterborough THE PEDAGOGY will be with us tomorrow. It's the oc- casion of the Annual Ontario Teachers' Bonspiel, a curling classic inaugurated by the late Doug Waugh, a teacher at OCVI, back about 20 years ago and has grown in popu- larity and numbers steadily, from the very first 'spiel, when it took a lot of hard work to get the event off the ground. Now this bonspiel is so strongly supported' by school teachers from all parts of the province, that the facil- ities of both The Oshawa Curl- ing Club and Oshawa Golf Club are required, to accom- modate the huge entry list, expected to reach the limit of 56 rinks. They each play three~ games, in a double- draw, full day of competition. At Oshawa Curling Club to- day, they have a full entry of 32 rinks participating in the popular annual "Boxing Day" bonspiel, which used to be an affair but is now filled to capacity by local rinks "open" | freee they dropped a 3-2 decision to the 67's before 1,089 fans, in an OHA Junior 'A' schedule game at the Civie Auditorium. but given a miscondu - i 3 words.
