Domtar Lay-Off MONTREAL (CP) -- Domtar Pulp and Paper Ltd. announced Tuesday that about 1,000 pro- duction workers will be laid off at its Cornwall fine paper mill for 10 days following Dec. 23 be- cause of a slowdown in demand for paper products. The company said in a state- ment the employees may take their four-day Christmas holi- day and part of their 1968 vaca- tions to make up for loss of pay during the 10-day layoff. Refugee Grants TORONTO (CP) -- Grants to- talling $35,000 have been award- ed by the United Church of Can- ada for refugee relief in the Middle East and South Vietnam, it was announced Tuesday. A $20,000 grant for Arab and Israeli refugees was granted by the church's committee on over- seas relief and inter-church aid and is to be distributed by the World Council of Churches and the Near East Christian Coun- cil. It was the second $20,000 grant made to the Middle East this year. A $10,000 grant was made for assistance to refugees in South Vietnam, also to be distributed by the World Council of Churches. The announcement said $5,000 is being spent on medical sup- plies for a new civilian hospital in North Vietnam. It comes from a $100,000 fund raised by the world council, to which the United Church contributes, a Roman Catholic relief agency and the International Red Cross. (CP) -- A single-engine aircraft which carried a Stratford man to his death last October did not have a "solid certificate of air wor- thiness," a federal transport de- partment inspector told a coroner's jury Monday night. Insp. Brian Aston said eleva- tors had been removed from the aircraft taken to a relair shop and then returned to Stratford for installation. He said all such operations required the signa- ture of a qualified mechanic.
