Frankly, not much is known about how it actually accom- plishes things, yet it does. In the earlier years the dan- ger consisted of muscle sprains and sometimes even a broken bone because of the muscular convulsions that accompanied the electroshock. Since then im- proved equipment and _tech- niques have controlled that dan- ger substantially, and I would have to reply "no" to your question of whether it is "'dan- gerous" now. The benefits sought with this treatment involve the mind and emotions, not the body. We simply do not know a great many things about how the brain and emotions behave, but the best explanation I have heard of the usefulness of ECT is that in some way it breaks up the patterns, the emotional "cramps" if you want to call it that! \ TOO MUCH FEAR For example, a person nurses some fear, worry or anxiety, and in time it becomes such a habit that even the faintest reference to a touchy subject throws the person into deep and Treatments For Electroshock Ills By JOSEPH G. Your question of whether treatments are advised only when a person is "'insane" is difficult to answer because '"'in- sane" really is a very vague word. We certainly would not call a person "'insane" because he is severely depressed. Yet ECT is sometimes the best treatment for that. It depends, of course, on the individual case. If, instead of using the term 'insane,"" you will think of emo- tional illness, you will have a clearer understanding. An un- duly nervous person has an emotional problem; the person with schizophrenia who has to be hospitalized also has an emo- tional problem, but a far more severe one. ECT may be helpful in less severe cases as well as the se- vere ones which are inexactly called "insanity."
