THE OSHAWA TIMES, Monday, December 4, 1967 ae. CAS CASEWORKER Morton Marder has re- ceived a master's degree from the University of To- ronto. Mr. Marder, a gradu- ate of O'Neill Collegiate and Vocational Institute, has ac- cepted a position as case- worker at the Children's Aid Society in Oshawa. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Marder, 632 Somer- ville Ave. Enzyne Aids 14 Persons NEW YORK (AP) -- An ex- perimental treatment with an enzyme has shown favorable-- but tentative--effects in a hand- ful of children and adults with one form of acute leukemia, a group of New York scientists said today. Researchers said they~ were encouraged, but they pointed out how early the results were, that the results were similar to those attained with' standard treatment, and that only small doses of the drug have been given. On the other hand, they said seven out of seven patients with acute lymphobalstic leukemia showed a prompt response when treated with the enzyme, L-as- paraginase. This common form of leukemia is, however, almost most responsive to standard treatments. Most important perhaps is that the enzyme is a natural an- tagonist to a protein building- block or amino acid produced by normal cells. Some cancer cells cannot produce the amino acid, and must absorb what they need from body fluids. One theory indicates that de- struction of the amino acid in the body fluids could then selec- tively hamper cancer cells. REPORT IN TORONTO The report on the drug trials was made at the ann meet- ing of the American Association of Hematology in Toronto by a group of researchers from Me- morial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases, and the Sloan- Kettering Institute for Cancer "Research, New York City. The report was released si- multaneously in New York. The work involves the amino acid, asparagine--originally found in the vegetable asparagus from which it derived its name. Only small amounts of the drug have been used. Further- more, researchers are only be- ginning to test the toxicity of higher levels of the drug in human patients, after extensive animal trials. NEW HOUSING GLASGOW (AP) -- A car lov- ers' paradise for 30,000 people and their automobiles is planned at a cost of $600,000,000 at Erskine, Renfrewshire, near Glasgow, local authority clerk James MacFarlane announced. Each house wil! have a covered parking space and there will be three open spaces for every four houses. For those who walk, there will be a completely de- tached sidewalk system. lf A Woman Meets A Man Who Looks Her Straight In The Eye . . she'd better do some-| thing about her figure. | sper A service station; 4 just at the edge of the desert hung up bi this sign: 'Don't 9 ask us for informa- tion. tt we knew anything, we wouldn't be here.
