If you say it, believe it and help yourself by changing a few other habit patterns while you try to kick the smoking habit, you should be able to do it. This is the basic idea behind a five-day plan developed by the Seventh-day Adventists to help people stop smoking. Rev. L. E. Dasher has worked with the program in Toronto and Montreal. "Some people come for a night or two to see if there is some magic formula we can give them," he says. 'There isn't, but about 80 per cent quit during the five days and we have done some checking, and he think about half stay off." The prograim includes films, talks, a buddy system and group therapy. The Adventists have a smoker's dial you can phone for recorded encourage- ment. But the backbone of the program is the hints on how to help yourself. Seventh-day frown on smoking members of the faith. Mr. Dasher says the program is considered a public service, though, not an opportunity to" proselytize. DON'T USE FEAR "We look at smoking as an international health hazard The men who started it thought that if we could devel- op a program to help people stop smoking, it would be something we could contribute you could pay $20 more for these Venetians... but would you get more suit! -- We sincerely believe that this handsome Ven- tian is the finest value in town. The cut, the fabric, the finesse -- all are superior. The reason you pay many dollars less than you thought is that our buyers have such good "noses" for value in the market. Come on in and save on their latest discovery! SIZES 36 TO 52 . Adventists | among | St. Nick's Gift Store ' to the welfare of the world." He says he and the doctors who talk to the groups have no doubt cigarettes contribute to the incidence of lung can- cer, heart ailments and other lesser known but serious ma- ladies, The talks and fifms pull no punches dealing with this possibility. Mr. Dasher says they are not. an attempt to frighten people into quitting, because if that tactic worked at all it would probably only have a temporary success. They are trying to get them to accept and acknowledge the idea that smoking may be harmful. "We believe a person has to have a really good, sound mo- | tive if he wants to stop. Other- wise he's kidding himself. "We tell people to say 'I choose not to smoke' rather than making themselves a promise because we find peo- ple follow a choice. They break a promise and feel guilty." AVOID LIQUOR For the five-day period and as long as it will help, they suggest a number of habit changes Avoid tea, coffee and alco hol. They .are all associated with the habit of smoking. Mr Dasher says tea and coffee are stimulants that aggravate the desire to smoke. Alcohol's reputation. as a_ resolution weakener is well known Avoid heavily spiced foods that also act as stimulants Drink a lot of water and | fruit juices, partly to rinse out | your system, partly as a sub- stitute for cigarettes. Take a- warm, relaxing shower morning and evening A booklet of day-by-day hints given people in the program suggests using a shower as a substitute for a smoke when points out that it fs difficult to smoke in a shower. Deep breathing will battle a sudden craving. After dinner or at noon, keep busy. Don't relax at a time when you are used to sil- ting over c@ffee and smokes> Go for a walk, tackle your hobby, but don't relax into an accustomed smoking situa- tion. There are two other things to be wary of, your smoking friends and situations with built-in tensions. Avoid them both if you can. If'you can't, be conscious they will both tempt you to smoke GIMMICKS CAN HELP Mr. Dasher says if you think commercial no-smoking aids will help you, check with your doctor, and by all means use them. "Tf it takes work, use them "We tell people if a craving seems too strong to resist, to try resisting a minute at a time. Say to yourself, 'I choose not to smoke for 60 seconds' and watch a second hand. Do it again if you need to, then you'll find the peak is gone. and you haven't smoked." Gaining weizht is a problem for some people when they quit smoking. Mr.* Dasher Says you should not worry too much about it until the early days of your battle are over Try not to,make compulsive , eating a substitute for smok- gimmicks to ing. Chew gum or drink water or fruit juice instead. ' Some of your weight gain may occur because food be- gins to taste better. You may eat more. without realizing you are. If you do, you can cut down, Mr. Dasher says there are three other weapons for you to use, Your sense of humor is one. Remember your world will not come to an end if you quit smoking, it will probably improve. i Another is to remind your- self sternly that part of your craving for a cigarette comes of your feeling sorry for your- self because you can't have one. | Another is to pray.
