(CP Photo) Canada Seeks Contracts For New Zealand Nuclear Plant WELLINGTON (CP) -- Can- ada lost no time in striking back in the contest to build New Zealand's first nuclear power station. A high-level mis- sion has restored Canada to the lead, at least in public opinion. The first New Zealane nuclear station is not due to start producing electricity until 1977, but already the contest for the order is remarkably keen. Canada, Britain, West Ger- many and Sweden are all intev- ested, but Britain is showing up! Ltd., led by J. L. Gray. as Canada's closest rival. He lost no time in saying that Britain has more experience in running nuclear power stations than any other country--and that Britair. would certainly be ready to tender for the first New Zea- land station. "IT am willing to begin nego- \tiating right away," he said. | Canada replied with the visit of a delegation of four experts from Atomic Energy of Canada power station New Zealand requires. CANADA HAS STATIONS It has been firmly established that New Zealand's circum- stances call for an atomic sta- tion using natural unenriched uranium with heavy water as moderator. Only Canada has such stations in operation. Britain says it has the know- how, and that by the time the station is required it will have stations of this kind operating But Canada maintains that its head start will mean that it can offer more advanced designs. The visiting Canadians made these points in interviews in several cities. They insisted that there was no question of trying to negotiate a sale at the present time, and said their aim was to bring latest Cana- diay designs, training methods and ideas on nuclear power to the notice of the New Zealand land power engineers, electricity department' and the Atomic Energy Committee. They talked with Electricity Minister T. P. Shand and numerous New Zealand 0*fi- cials. In addition, they inspect- ed the planned site of the first nuclear station, on the Kaipara Harbor, north of Auckland. Accompanied by New Zea- they made a detailed appraisal of the site and waded through the mud of the harbor foreshore to study the needs of a statioa in the area. The race seems likely to con- tinue equally briskly in coming months. Visits by other British and Canadian experts. on aspects of nuclear power are scheduled.
