22 'THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursday, September 28, 1967 Drop-In For Drop-Outs Operates In Winnipeg WINNIPEG (CP) -- Four young students operated a summer drop-in for drop-outs in Winnipeg's north end. The four were attempting to interpret the needs of teen-agers in a low-income area where there has been mounting concern over increasing delinquency and a lack of recreational facilities. They were part of an organization called Summer of Service--SoS-- '67, one of 20 such groups that worked across Canada this year. Dawne Bradshaw is from British Columbia, Bill Steeves from New Brunswick, Greg Kealy from Ontario and Nancy Shirmer is from Cali- fornia. The purpose of their program was to assist young students in the area and help teen-agers, 14 years and up, through service. They found the task chal- lenging and rewarding--and sometimes depressing. "We joined SoS filled with romantic notions of helping to change unpleasant situations but after three weeks we were fully cognizant of our illusions," one of the group said. Endorsed by the Roman Catholic, Anglican and United churches and the YW and YMCA, the program also had the purpose of examining the usefulness of agencies already working in the area while assessing the need for additional agencies, Daily and nightly drop-ins were held for teens in the neighborhood where records were played plus cards and games, The gatherings also acted as a valve for young- sters, places where they could complain and be heard. TALK OVER PROBLEMS The centre was planned as a place where group commu- nication was encouraged and even the unhappiest young- sters could talk about their problems with willing group listeners. Said one of the volunteers: "We can't go and see their parents directly because of our age but if we can help these kids think for them- selves, we've accomplished something." Dawne Bradshaw, 19, found summer boring at home. She wanted deep involvement in a project and found the group filled the need. "I'm learning more than | those I'm trying to help." Greg Kealy, 18, was drawn | to the work by "romantic notions of personal achieve- ment" but this attitude changed. He now only wants to be able to reach the teens and help them in any way. "Out of the conflict and ten- sion these kids live with can come a constructive thing," he said during the summer, "These kids make out at 12, "and I know I'll feel more sniff glue at 13 and drop out | LAS VEGAS, Nev.
