By ELINOR READING EDMONTON (CP) --lIf family sewing means messing up the dining table, maybe you're just making things hard for yourself. Helen Samuel, clothing spe- cialist at the University of Alberta, says you can save sewing time by arranging an efficient workspace. The same principles apply to furnishing a sewing room and to setting up a sewing machine in a corner of the kitchen or basement. "If you're right-handed, it's important that you arrange things working from right to left," Mrs. Samuel says. She recommends a U- shaped arrangement of three basic pieces: work table with- in reach on the right, sewing machine in the centre, iron- ing board on the left. "The other thing that's a necessity is a swivel chair." Then a turn of the chair takes an unfinished garment from cutting table to sewing machine. Another turn, and you're at the ironing board to press seams and facings. NEED GOOD LIGHT Also within reach must be a wastebasket, a _ full-length mirror and a good light. Mrs. | Samuel prefers a draftsman's lamp that can be adjusted to any height. "It's my feeling that a lot of people don't sew simply because they have inadequate lighting."" : The work space can be any- thing from a kitchen table to an elaborately constructed THE STARS SAY By ESTRELLITA |FOR TOMORROW Certain restrictive influences during Wednesday's early- hours will call for unusual discretion Convenient Work Space Makes Sewing a Breeze sewing unit with special drawers for spools, patterns, fabrics and equipment. You can improvise a sew- ing unit by adding a hinged drop leaf to the back of a low chest of drawers. Extended, the leaf provides a wide space to lay out patterns and cut; closed, it saves space in the room. Casters with brakes permit the chest to be moved. "This would be something that any homemaker could set up with little expense. "Sewing units are better if you can get at them from both sides to cut. They shouldn't be against the wall." A table against a wall is hard to reach across and tends to become a junk-catch- er. SPACE FOR PATTERNS The table top, or the expandable top of the sewing chest, should be at least three feet wide to provide enough space to lay out patterns. "Another possibility is to place a removable top across two separate cabinets," In the university's recent- ly-constructed household eco- nomics building, self-con- tained sewing units provide a sleek variation on the U- shaped home arrangement. The tables, six feet long | and 40 inches wide, have 18- inch drop leaves at each end to give a nine-foot span for cutting.
