The study also traces a change in the shape of the female labor force since 1951--' "a tremendous rise" in the number of married women over 35-taking jobs. The study is the fifth in a series prepared for DBS on var- ious aspects of the labor force. It was conducted by John D. Allingham of the University of Western Ontario. Mr. Allingham demonstrates the effect of education most vividly in the 40-44 age group. Here, nine out of 10 single women with high school educa- tion have jobs. Among single women with only elementary school education, about six of 10 are working. For married women in the same age bracket, 31 per cent of those with high school diplo- mas were working, 21 per cent of those with an elementary school background. Of Work Force women were returning to work during their mid-30s and early 40s in much greater numbers in 1961 than in 1951. His analysis used data from the censuses of the two years. He suggested that the devel- opment is due to the changing] nature of the mother's role. Canadian women are bearing/lies fewer children after 35 than American women; the last-born child will have entered school while the average mother is in her mid-30s, 74 CELINA STREET Education combines in strik- ing fashion with the trend. "Once married, women of higher education are expected to have fewer children," says the study. "Women of higher education are likely to marry men with higher education and ... are more likely to have access to automated substitutes for household chores. "Thus, ironically, such women have more technological power to care for smaller fami- The study says a transition in, With their new willi to and the judging of the beard growing contest was something new in the way of entertainment for Osh- awa. --Oshawa Times Photos THE STARS SAY By ESTRELLITA FOR WEDNESDAY Some planetary restrictions afflict personal relationships now.
