MOLNE Dear Dr. Molner: Do you rec- ommend removal of cataracts? My father is 85 and has cata- racts on both eyes. An eye spe- cialist recommends surgery. His general health is no prob- lem and e recently had a com- plete physical. How soon do you think this might cause blindness if he doesn't have surgery? Should you let him go blind, or nearly blind, before considering sur- gery?--Mrs.. 1. H. Of course I favor removal of cataracts. That is one kind of near blindness which can be corrected with great success. Overtones from parts of your lletter which I did not print indi- cate that somebody is trying to frighten this elderly gentleman thing to do, Obviously your father's eye- sight already is seriously im- paired. Anyway, eye specialists do not, except under extraordi- nary circumstances, recom- mend surgery until cataracts have caused considerable loss mendeo sooner for, let us say, a toolmaker, jeweler or other person who needs his eyesight at maximum.) DONE EVERY DAY Removal of cataracts |s being) performed every day and with) great success, and I have in| past months printed several Yet-| ters from patients describing how much happier they are, and in some cases commenting that they had ntt realized how much their eyes had failed, be- cause the failure had been gradual. How soon your father would) be classified as "blind" is} something I cannot predict, but the eye specialist, by noting the) rate at which the cataracts are ' Removal Of Cataracts Is Usually Successful | R, MD progressing, probably can give you a good estimate. Your father is evidently in good condition for a man of his age. It seems a shame to delay the ctaract surgery until, per- haps, he becomes too frail to tolerate the surgery well, and jthen would be blind as well as old and feeble. Dear Dr. Molner: What is a myocardial infraction? Is it a heart attack? Is it in the severe or light classification?--J. B. S. Yes, it's a heart attack--but it is infarction, not infraction, a mistake which a great many people make. "Infarct" means that blood has been shut off to part of the heart muscle, thus damaging with false tales. That is a cruel|/the muscle. Any infarction--or heart at- tack--is serious, but the loca- Individual Championship Play) FAMOUS HANDS West dealer, East-West vulnerable. NORTH aK54 748 64 HA10842 WEST EAST 3108763 = @AQ2 926 KS Bier Saunt 197 Q aed sotra a9 @AIT10982 @AQIE53 ----- The bidding: 46 Dble Pass 5@ Pass 5 Opening lead--jack of spades, It is easier to play the per- fect game when you see all four hands, Thus, in the present deal, South would have no trouble }making eleven tricks if he knew that West's king of diamonds was unguarded. He would re- fuse to finesse and would lose only a spade and a heart. But when the hand was play ed, declarer finessed and went down three. The deal occurred in the match between Italy and the United States in 1965. The American South ruffed the second round of spades with the eight and then played the A-J of trumps, felling the K-Q and establishing the seven as an entry to dummy. When East now led another spade, declarer ruffed with the nine, entered dummy with a trump, cashed the ace of clubs, and then finessed the queen of diamonds, losing to the king. Another spade lead drew his last trump, and when the dia- monds proved to be divided 4-1, South wound up down three. It may seem harsh to criti- elze declarer for having failed to guess the diamond situation and make the contract, but de- spite this a strong case can be made for leading the ace and nabbing the king. The method of play. actually used by declarer gains only when East has specifically the K-x of diamonds. It loses or breaks even in all other cases. But the bidding indicates that East cannot have the K-x of diamonds because that would mean that West started with three diamond losers as well as the Q-x of hearts, and he could not possibly bid four spades vulnerable with such a holding. It follows from this that de- clarer's only real chance of making the contract is to find the diamonds divided 4-1, with the king unguarded. He should therefore reject the finesse and lead the ace: in the hope of catching the king. Israel Repairs Arab Arsenal TEL AVI V(AP )--Israeli Army mechanics are working around the clock 'at a secret base to service and repair the vast. arsenal of Arab tanks, trucks and guns captured in the six-day June war. A large number of reservist craftsmen, armorers and tech- nicians are being kept in the army to salyage more than $1,000,000,000 worth of hard- ware, ranging from 155-mil- limetre Long Tom guns to Carl Gustav machine-pistols. "We have enough captured weapons to equip the whole army," says one reliable source. The Israelis are keeping the Arab equipment under tight se- curity wraps, butinformed sources say at least 100 of the 700 Soviet-built Egyptian tanks --mostly T54s abandoned in Si- nai--are immediately servica- ble, with sufficient spare parts and ammunition to keep them operational for "a considerable period." This was made possible by Stripping other captured equip- ment, the bulk of which is of Soviet origin QUEENIE tion f the clot or embolus which shuts off the blood flow largely determines how serious the at- tack is. It always does some damage, but about 75 per cent of patients return to their usual of vision. (It might be recom-| work. Dear Dr. Molner; I read in a 1967 consumer's publication that radium dial watches are dangerous and young people should not wear them or carry jthem in their pockets. Is. this true? If so, how dangerous are they? I have worn such a watch for two years.--D. K. I am completely unable to find any such report in the pub- lications I have. The amount of radiation from such a watch dial is so saint that it could not possibly be harmful. Dear Dr. Molner: What is the "Circle of Willis?" I never heard of it.--Mrs. G. H. The Circle of Willis is a com- plex of arteries which circle the "Do you have any identifica- tion--driver's license . . . tele» phone number... birth marks ...?" spinal cord at the base of the brain. Sometimes an aneurysm (bulge) in one of these vessels may rupture, causing hemor- rhage, which perhaps is the connection in which you heard the term.
