ALMOST EVERYONE has taken note of a fair or exhibi- tion grounds after the affair is over and seen the prepon- derance of litter left behind by the people .You can rest assured that when they go back again the next time all the rubbish will have been hauled away by the atten- dants. But can you imagine what would happen if the at- tendants did not clear the rubbish from these public gathering places? Naturally, they would become clogged with debris of all kinds, re- sulting in the stoppage of pub- lic functions . LAKES AND RIVERS are public gathering places al- most entirely without -- atten- dants to pick up and haul away the trash left behind by the people of the great out- doors -- the result being that these public places are slowly but surely being polluted with foreign substances. In areas on and around lakes of heavy usage, the problem is more acute and in time some of these waters are destined to lose much of their appeal and attractiveness unless the out- doorsmen do their part in helping to keep these recre- ational areas clean. WINTER ANGLING is on the increase in most areas and it is becoming increasing- ly important that winter ang- lers pay particular attention to keeping their fishing lakes free of trash. Summer patrons of these areas are by far the worst offenders and it is high time that stringent measures are created to curb this abuse right away. It is true that there is legislation to punish offenders, but in the remote and unpatrolled sec- tions of the country, this goes on without any regard for the next user. DO YOUR PART and avoid cutting trees or branches from trees along a shoreline. Invariably these belong to OUTDOORS By Bill Owens Times Outdoor Writer someone and must be left alone. If you are a winter angler, take along one of the new heating units now on the market for your heat supply. Do not leave cans, bottles, boxes, or garbage of any kind when you leave your camp- ing spot. If you move into a trapper's cabin or other build- ing in an emergency, remem- ber that it was left open for this sole purpose and your ap- preciation will be noticed more so if you leave it the Same way you found it. Leave some firewood if you have used the supply; the next party may not be able to pro- vide for themselves as well if there is an injury involved. HERE AND THERE: With the summer just about end- ing, the young hunters will be looking forward to start- ing off with a bang. If you do not have a licence you will be required to take a hunter safety course, then pass an examination similar to a car driving test. This test will cost $3.00 and will be conduct- ed by someone from the de- partment of lands and for- ests ... $83,580.80 has been ° given out in grants to conser- vation organizations in Can- ada by the Canadian National Sportsmen's Show'... CA- NADIAN INDUSTRIES will be spending $2,000,000 in ex- pansion in the sporting am- munition plant at Browns- burg, Quebec. This will mean more and better ammunition for the rifle user... MOST COMMON mistake in the use of farm woodlands is to per- mit grazing by livestock. Little is gained in the form of pasture and the loss to trees is very significant . . ALTHOUGH THEY are sub- jected to much more severe weather than other bears, only the polar bear which will bear young, sleeps during the winter . Lolich Ends Losing Streak With Win Over Baltimor By HAL BOCK Associated Press Sports Writer Mickey Lolich, a 14 - game winner for Detroit last year, fi- nally ended a 10-game personal losing streak Friday night when he pitched a five-hitter and beat Baltimore 5-2.
