2 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Seturdey, August 5, 1967 A GLANCE AROUND THE GLOBE Johnson Challenged On Separatist Issue MONTREAL (CP) -- Premier Daniel Johnson of Quebec "should state once and for all that he is a separatist and call an election immediately on this issue,' Eric Kierans, president of the Quebec Liberal Federa- tion, said Friday. Mr. Kierans also told a press conterence that last week's visit to Canada by President de Gaulle of France was "'a good thing' for English-speaking C: nadians. Himself English-speaking but with a fluent command of French, the Liberal official said of the controversial visit: "It will jolt us... and make us think." He said the slogan "Vive le | Quehec libre,' used by Gen. de § Gaulle, in a July 24 speech at Montreal, has "very deep roots" in Canadian and Quebec politics and the general was not aware of the "nuances" involved in| the phrase. "People must keep their nerve about everything else." The visit would bring home to English - speaking Canadians that "french is not a foreign language in Canada."' Those outside the French-Ca- missed Quebec intentions with which side their bread is but- tered on," are themselves "Eng- AWED BY GROWTH Gen. de Gaulle "overwhelmed" by big growth of Quebec society and Quebec- ers were themselves over- whelmed by the recognition of this growth given by the French chief of state. 'This accounted for the excite- ment generated by the general's visit, which Mr. Kierans termed "a love affair--a very legiti- mate affair." The federation chief said events surrounding the visit have left the separatist Rassem- bl it pour I"ind dance na- tionale in a stronger position. Mr. Johnson had made Que- becers uncertain of his plans and raised doubts in the minds of investors. "We are facing a very serious recession," said Mr. Kierans, who spoke mostly in French. SHULMAN'S RACE BIAS TORONTO (CP) -- The On- tario 'supervising coroner's ex- ecutive assistant told the Parker royal commission in- quiry Friday that Dr. Morton Shulman is himself proof that there is no racial discrimina- tion in the appointment of Tor- onto coroners. Jack Hills also told the com- mission that Dr. Shulman, a Jew, handled more investiga- tions than any other Toronto coroner during the two years before he was appointed chief Metropolitan Toronto coroner in 1963. Dr. Shulman, appointed a coroner in 1952, was fired as chief coroner last April. His nin aunt vant tr subsequent charges of govern- mert suppression of inquests and inquest evidence led to the inquiry. REPLIES TO CHARGES Mr. Hill's statements were in reply to charges Thursday by Dr. Shulman that senior civil servants were practising racial discrin.ination in the appoint- ment of coroners. The former chief coroner also claimed that non-Anglo Saxon coroners in Toronto were never given assignments. Mr. Hills said that a study by the ettorney - general's depart- ment in 1962 showed that Dr. Shuiman handled more cases between 1960 and 1962 than any other Toronto coroner. Dr. Shulman said later out- side the hearing he would prove Mr. Hills wrong. Dy. Shulman's charge of ra- cial discrimination were also denied by Frank Wilson, assist- ant deputy attorney - general. MADE INQUIRIES Dr. Shulman told the inquiry Thursday that he telephoned Mr. Wilson in June last year to ask what had happened to an application for a coroner's posi- tion filed about a year earlier by Dr. George Sereny, a Hun- garian-Canadian. Dr. Shulman said Mr. Wilson "made certain upsetting com- CHARGES DENIED ments about Dr. Sereny's na- tionality and informed me some persons' applications take much longer to process than others." "That's a ludicrous and spec- cious allegation and I've never had it made before either in practice or in life," Mr. Wilson said Friday. "T didn't recall the applica- tion wher Dr. Shulman phoned and 1 asked him to spell Dr. Sereny's,name so I could check the file. ") deny that I asked Dr. Sereny's nationality. We don't file under nationalities." EXPLAINS DELAY Mr. Wilson said there was a delay in deciding on Dr. See reny's application because Dr. Sereny was a specialist in in- ternal medicine and alcoholism research. The inquiry continues Tues- day. Commission counsel Charles Dubin said in an inter- view he expects the inquiry will end early next week and all lawyers involved will be asked to pyepare their final argu- ments.
