Howard MAJOR LEAGUE pennant races still have more than two months to go and from all indications there's going to be a scrap to the wire in both the American and National Leagues. Seven clubs are still within striking distance of first place in both leagues, al- though you can probably count Washington Senators out of the American League scram- ble. The club just doesn't have the talent to grab a pennant. CHICAGO WHITE Sox con- tinue to prove that good pitch- ing can make up for lack of power, but two power clubs, Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox, refuse to falter. Boston in particular is a real surprise, because the club isn't ton deep in the pitching flepariment. But: manager Dick Williams' youthful squad refuses to knuckle under. It seems strange that Carl Yas- trzemski should be referred to as "the old man" on the Bos- ton roster but among the regulars that's his title DETROIT TIGERS Could still come back to challenge the White Sox for top spot, and for the veteran Al Kaline, playing in a World Series would be something. One of the finest hitters in the Ameri- can League, Kaline hasn't even been close to a World Series berth since he joined the Tigers 15 years ago. With him back in the. lineup, how- ever, Tigers will be tough in the stretch. He's been side- lined with a broken hand IT'S STILL strange to see an American League pen- nant race that doesn't involve the New York Yankees. True the Yanks are right behind Washington, Cleveland and Baltimore, but Ralph Houk's squad has too many holes. Younger players haven't been forthcoming to replace aging SPORTSCOPE | TODAY BASEBALL Legion Pee Wee League -- Credit Union vs Police Assoc.: Oshawa Dodgers vs South End Billiards and Quality Fuels vs Oshawa Towing; all games at K of C Field, at 6:15 p.m. Eastern Ontario Midget League -- Oshawa 'A' Majors vs Oshawa 'A', at Lakeview Park, 6:30 p.m Eastern Ontario Bantam League -- Whitby vs Oshawa Legionnaires, at Alexandra Park, 6:30 p.m. Eastern Ontario Pee Wee League -- Oshawa at Co- bourg, 6:30 p.m. TENNIS Kawartha Mixed League -- Oshawa at Lindsay TC, 7:30 p.m. Inter-County 'A' Mixed League -- Oshawa at Credit Valley TC, 7:15 p.m. LACROSSE OLA Senior 'B' League -- Fergus Thistles vs Oshawa Lasco Steelers, at Civic Audi- torium, 8:39 p.m. and Mickey Mantle. A weak New York club doesn't do nach 'for the American League, however, although some general managers are probably just as happy to see the club stay at the bottom. OVER IN the National Teague, last year's hero, Harry Walker, has taken the walk along the plank, Last year he was hailed as a gen- ius when four of his outfield- ers were hitting better than 300. This year, with practi- cally the same team, Walker can't, get the Pirates moving, so he's out of a job. Walker is tou good a batting coach to be out of a job for long, however. LIKE THE American League, one club continues to act as an upstart in the Na- tional. It's Leo Durocher's scrappy Chicago Cubs, with Chatham's Ferguson Jenkins supplying the pitching magic. Jenkins proved his right to stardom in the All-Star game and Tuesday he downed the Atlanta Braves, chilling that club's aspirations for a jump in the standings. And while it's strange to see the Yankees out of the American League race, it's equally as strange to see Los Angeles Dodgers _hobnobbing with Houston Astros and New York Mets. WHEN MAJOR league ex- Pansion occurred a few vears ago, critics said. the majors didn't have enough players to form extra teams. The new teams would be years catch- ing up to the power clubs. Vell, look now. Two of those former power clubs, the Yankees and Dodgers, aren't doing any better than the new clubs.
