@ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursday, July 13, 1967 4 TUESDAY'S MAJOR league all-star game proved once again that pitching still plays a big part in a baseball game. Maybe there aren't as many .300 hitters in the big leagues today as there were 20 years ago, but the teams today are all rich in young pitching tal- ent. In rapid succession they came into the game, Juan Marichal, Ferguson Jenkins, Bob Gibson, Chris Short, Mike Cuellar, Don Drysdale and Tom Seaver for the Na- tional League. Dean Chance, Jim McGlothlin, Gary Peters, Al Downing and Jim Hunter for the American. IT WAS hardly a game to keep the fans jumping up and down, but it was one that made you pass up a trip out of the living room in case you missed something. One fellow was saying he left the room for a minute and missed Tony Perez game - winning home run. Of course he was able to get a look at it minutes later on the replay. AS COULD be expected when all-stars get together, the fielding was good, Out- fielders such as Willie Mays and Roberto Clemente made things look easy, but Tony. Conigliaro of Boston Red Sox came up with the catch of the night. Earlier, Hank Aaron, in trying for a_ shoestring catch, missed and the ball By Eric Wesslby Times Sports Editor wound up behind him for a double. JENKINS MADE a good showing, although he was tag- ged for the tying home run by Brooks Robinson. But his six strikeouts enabled him to tie an all-star game record. The Chatham youngster has gone a long way since his minor baseball days in On- tario. And how many fans in this area remember that Osh- awa juveniles beat Jenkins in an Ontario final in 19597 NEW YORK Yankees' great star, Mickey Mantle, received a tremendous ovation from the California fans, proving he's still a popular man with the fans. It's too bad they couldn't have been rewarded by a hit, but strikeout was the name of the game. And didn't the American League have its revenge when Mays also took a third strike. DETROIT TIGERS are con- ducting a baseball clinic and tryout camp at Peterborough on Saturday, July 29. The clinic has been arranged by the Eastern Ontario Baseball Association executive, along with the Peterborough Boys' Baseball Association. Players must take their own spikes, gloves wee, bantam, midget, nile and junior players.
