12 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Monday, June 26, 1967 Cardinals To Receive Birettas VATICAN CITY (CP)--Pope Paul opened a week of cere- mony and festivity today cre- ating 27 new cardinals of the Roman Catholic church. The Pope met in secret con- sistory with 35 members of the Sacred College of Cardinals for them to confirm his 27 nomi- nees to their ranks, The meet- ing lasted 23 minutes, and the confirmation was automatic. Wednesday, at a semi-public consistory, the Pope will pre- sent the red biretta--the three- ridged pillbox hat--to 24 of the new cardinals. Thursday, they will join him in celebrating mass in St. Peter's Square, a public ceremony being held out- doors for the first time so that more people may attend. The other three new cardinals are the papal nuncios, or am- passadors, to Spain, Portugal and Italy. Because of the church's special position in those countries and their con- cordats with the Vatican, the three nuncios will get their red hats from the chiefs of state. The consistory membership in the College of Cardinals to 118, its largest in history. The consistory also gave the church the widest international representation ever in the coun- cil of the Pope's highest advis- ers. The College of Cardinals now represents 43 countries, two more than before. Creation of the new princes of the Church also lowered the average age of the cardinals from 71 to 71. The new cardinals are four Americans, 12 Italians, three Frenchmen, the first Bolivian, the first Indonesian, and an Argentine, a Monagasque, a Dutchman, a German, a Swiss and a Pole. The percentage of Italians in the college -- for centuries a largely Italian body -- now is reduced to one-third. When the names of the 27 new cardinals were announced two weeks ago, Pope Paul's choice surprised many Vatican observers who had expected younger men, fewer Italians and more from developing coun- tries. ++ This was the second group of cardinals created by Pope Paul since he became pontiff four years ago. In his first consis- tory Feb. 22, 1965, he also raised 27 prelates to the purple. Patron Saint Paid Tribute MONTREAL (CP)--An esti- mated 1,000,000 persons lined Sherbrooke Street for the color- ful and gay St. Jean Baptiste parade Saturday night as Que- bec celebrated St. Jean Bap- tiste Day, honoring its patron saint. The three-hour procession, made up of 19 illuminiated floats, bands and majorettes was said to have been the best ever held in Montreal. The parade theme, the inter- national vocation of Quebec, was shown in a float that dem- onstrated the harmony of rela- tions between Quebec and the rest-of the world. Quebec's achievements in the field of culture, education, sci- ence, economy and sports were also shown in the parade floats. Expo 67 and the City of Mont- real were honored and the Expo theme song Hey Friend, Say Friend was played several times along the parade route by the bands taking part. The tradition of St. Jean Bap- tiste Day celebrations in French Canada goes back to the earli- est days of the colony. It is a feast of thanksgiving and a day of pride of achievement. Two Beatles Took LSD LONDON (AP)--Beatles John Lennon and George Harrison said Saturday they have taken the drug LSD. Their statement to reporters came a week after Beatle Paul McCartney said he had taken four "trips" with the hallucina- tory drug in the last year. In one experiment a group of the pop - singers took LSD to- gether, Harrison said. Brian Epstein, manager of the group, has already admitted taking the drug on five occa- sions. One experience was par- ticularly harrowing, said Ep- stein: "I don't think I shall ever be taking it again." Lennon said: 'We were not taking it for kicks, but were trying to find out about its po- tential for ourselves." Body Of Youth Found In Creek PORT BRUCE, Ont.
