6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Friday, June 23, 1967 THE QUEEN'S PLATE, Canada's "flat" racing clas- sic goes tomorrow at Wood- bine and it's the 108th run- ning of North America's old- est, uninterrupted race for thoroughbreds. Last - minute weather conditions plus early morning workouts to- day, may change the situa- tion, but at last count there were 13 three-year-old colts and one filly entered in the gruelling mile and one-quar- ter event. Conn Smythe's "Jammed Lovely" is the only filly in the race. Ette Rule and In The Ring are the only two American-owned entries, both owned by Buffalo men. Two Western Canada horses, Gilmore and Daup..in Bleu, are also in the running. At the moment, Pin Point, with Avelino Gomez aboard, is the positive favorite for owner Saul Wagman. Betemight, bought in nsid-May by Noel Hickey of Montreal, is the second choice. Ron Turcotte will be the jockey. Courant D'Air is another Quebec- 'owned entry. He's the small- est horse in the field but a blood relative of Northern Dancer and can not be count- ed out. Windfields Farm thave Blenheim Park as an early sprinter but their real hope is Battling, second 'choice in the winter - book wagering. Yuh takes yer 'choice -- and yer bets the 'rent! OSHAWA GENERALS, like vall good hockey clubs, con- SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell Associate Sports Editor tinue to qualify for mention in the mid-summer sports pages. Latest news from the Oshawa camp, although not actually news, since it has been hinted for some time, was confirmed this morning by general manager Matt Leyden. Matt has named Ivan Davie, well-known figure in district sports of hockey and lacrosse, particularly in Whitby in recent years, as his assistant. Ivan will be the Generals' team manager and their official scout, Each Jun- ior club has to do its own scouting, so the Generals can not consider Garry Young of Boston their own operator -- although he will naturally be working for the Bruins with the Generals in mind, when it comes to Junior 'A' talent. A bit of a character in his own right, Ivan is no "yes man" and his knowledge of hockey should make him a valuable addition to the Generals' "committee of operations". WEEKEND MENU -- Port Perry and District Minor Softball Association is holding , its fifth annual parade and booster night, tomorrow eve- ning, with the parade leav- ing Port Perry High School grounds at 6:00 o'clock. In a "B" division game Don Calder of Mister TV Towers, and Andy Konopacki of Jay- cees hooked up in a 1-1 10-in- ning tie, called because of cur- few. Scugogs broke loose for four runs in the, fourth inning ag- ainst Markham in the night- cap, although they outhit the Hawks 10-3. With one out in the fourth, Terry McQuade tripled and Ron Willoughby walked. Losing pitcher Ken McDowell fanned Leaming for the second out but An outfield error, a_ stolen base and Parkinson's second hit of the game accounted for Scu- gogs' final runs in the seventh Hawks touched Leaming for a run in the top of the seventh as Robinson walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Lumley's single. Burkholder, Lumley and Lei- shmen had the Markham hits, with Leaming walking only two batters, both in the seventh inning. Cheesman, a triple and single, Parkinson and Solomon Whitby Blanks each had two hits for Scugogs, with others going to March, McQuade, Ron Siblock and Leaming. In the first game of the even- ing, Darryl Hudgin singled in off single in the sixth for the only hits off Calder, who struck out 11 and walked two. The walks got Calder into trouble in the third inning when he walked the first two-batters. Hudgin advanced the runners with an infield out, and Calder retired Mosier on a grounder back to the box.
