J. S. : There are lots of reason. I'll give you some of the more sig- nificant ones. It depends on what a medi- cine is intended to do; how rap- idly or slowly it absorbs; whether it tends to irritate the stomach lining; sometimes whether its nature is changed by stomach juices. Long-acting drugs are usually taken morning and evening. Some antibiotics, taken orally, maintain their-action so that taken every six hours they pro- vide steady effect without a gap. Some appetite - depressing drugs are taken in the morning only, since later in the day the effect may linger and cause wakefulness at night. Drugs to calm. the digestive tract are commonly given be- fore meals but drugs to counter- act excessive acidity (as for an ulcer patient) are usually taken an hour or so after eating. Some medications may be ir- ritating to the stomach lining and so are taken after a meal when the stomach, being full, is protected by the presence of food. 2 It is obvious why sleeping pills are taken in the evening, but with other medications, such as digitalis, which may be taken only once a day, a physician specifies a fixed time of day, perhaps at breakfast, the pur- pose being to establish a daily pears 21 36. Accurate defensive play is frequently difficult, but it would be: well-nigh impossible without the aid of the many meaningful signals employed by an experi- enced partnership in everyday play. One defensive weapon, the suit - preference signal, is a camparative newcomer to the family of defensive conventions but is none the less an impor- tant additiion to the fold. Though it is used mostly in suit play and nearly always in connection with a ruffing situa- tion, there are times when the suit-preference convention can be profitably applied in notrump contracts in order to eliminate what might otherwise be an outright guess. Let's say that West leads a heart against three notrump. Declarer hopefully plays the queen from dummy, but East wins with the king and con- tinues with the ace, West fol. lowing with the deuce to iden- tify a five-card suit. When East now cashes the jack, dropping South's ten, Wést has achance to invoke the suit- preference convention. Since the 9-7-5 are all equals at this point, the card West chooses to play on the jack is, or should be highly significant to East. If West now played his low- est heart, the nine, he would be asking partner to shift to the higher-ranking suit, in this case spades, (A club shift is obvious- ly out of the question.) Note that without the suit- preference convention to guide him, East might easily choose the safer - looking retrun of a diamond at trick four and thus permit declarer to run _ nine tricks. But with West signaling for a spade return by playing the nine of hearts on the jack, it becomes automatic for East to return a spade and defeat the contract two tricks. LSD Capsule Sold By Girl For Dancing TORONTO (CP) -- Wendy Louise Watson, 18, of Willow dale, said Monday she sold a capsule of LSD to two under cover police on Nov. 18 fort spending money. On trial, the girl, also known as Gidget, said the capsule she sold to the police for $10 in a Yorkville restaurant was given to her by a friend to use be- fore attending a dance. She pleaded not guilty to two charges of trafficking in mar- ijuana and one charge of sell- ing LSD against the Food and Drugs Act. Constable Dennis King of the RCMP testified that he bought a $10 envelope of marijuana from the girl on Oct. 14 while posing in long hair and old clothes. He said he bought LSD from the girl while his .partner paid her $10 for an envelope of mar- ijuana. Miss Watson, who now is ate tending a business school, said the only time money changed hands were the threr. °9"%s with the police. How should we cope with them? Should we bring our leg up and rub the muscle to relax it, or just keep the leg stiff until the pain goes away?--Mrs. R. R. Changing position, including getting up and walking, is usu- ally better--but there are vari- ous methods which often can prevent or lessen leg and foot cramps. Dear Dr. Molner: My mother- in-law claims that pork chops that are breaded and fried are well done in 20 to 30 minutes. I say it takes 144 to 2 hours to get rid of the danger of trich- inosis.
