RTING Glencastle Avenue may well ay claim to the title of 'Pick- erel King" of Oshawa. It is doubtful that anyone will argue this point when the fish figures are shown. In 1964, this gregarious fisherman ipoated 81 pickerel, 10 pike and 4 lunge. The following year, 109 pickerel, 13 pike and 3 lunge found his lures irresis- tible. The 1966 season proved to be the bonanza, with 348 pickerel, 9 pike and 7 lunge being brought in to the boat. 'The average weight of the pickerel was three pounds, with some in the 9 to 11 pound class. A close look at this record fllustrates that each year the catch became greater, with the greatest increase taking place last year. This means that a systematic method of catching fish was being devel- oped with success being the ultimate goal. This singular success is due to persistent fishing; our angler believes in the adage that the time to go fishing is anytime. Further- more, we found no trouble at all to get at the secret of this phenominal fishing achieve- ment. FIRST OF ALL, there is the system of fishing the right places. During the month of May, the limestone shoals of West Lake in Prince Edward County tops this angler's fish- ing spot. In June, he moves over to Pigeon Lake, where he combs the waters till the end of July. In August and September he chooses Balsam Lake, with Canal Lake taking = top priority in the late fall. His equipment is a cedar strip boat with a 28 HP motor. A medium action spinning rod, which will take both trolling and casting, is equipped with a Luxor reel rigged with an eight-pound test line. He likes casting, but trolling brings about the best results. JOHN'S FAVORITE lures are the Golden Marathon Spoon, Veltex Spinner and worm combination, and for late fall, the Rebel in medium and large sizes dominates his tackle box. He prefers the Rebel over the Rapalla be- cause of its glittering finish. produce sporadically, but the above three are the consistent attractors. He has no place for the worm harness which so many pickerel fishermen use, because too many small fish are taken on this single hook gang and more often than not are injured when released. WITH THIS fishing gear he offers the following tips: Fish close to or right over weed beds and rocky shoals, Troll real slow with a steady line for this tasty fish. If this does . not produce, jig your rod to jerk your lure up and down, as with a jigging lure. An im- portant aspect of successful pickerel fishing is to get as close to the bottom as pos- sible. This pays off especially well over rock reefs. ALTHOUGH MANY anglers claim night fishing is best for the walleye, our expert can- not back this up, although he is presently working on this phase with the jointed Brooks Reefer and floating lures. So, if your choice is the pickerel, take a tip from an old pro and build up your tackle box with real choice lures. Persist in staying with your quarry and you will find your days filled with fishing fun. HERE AND THERE... Pickerel season opens May 6 in Prince Edward County and St. Lawrence River. The rest of the province opens on May 13. Daily limit is still six of any size, with the possession limit being one day's catch . . . The Oshawa and District Sportsmen's Association has placed garbage containers along Wilmot Creek, in the section flowing. through the Orono Tree Nursury. Anglers are asked to keep the stream and banks clean by putting their refuse in the containers . . « Oshawa's Rick Sheridan will be defending his 28 gauge crown this Sunday at the Prov- ince of Ontario open skeet championship shoot at Malton . .. Provincial parks south of the North shore of Lake Huron, French River, Lake Nipissing and Mattawa River open May 12. North of this line, the opening date is June 2. The -|Athletics' Jim (Catfish) Hunter pitched hitless ball and struck out 10 before leaving for a pinch hitter in the seventh. In the other American League games, all at night, Baltimore took over sole possession of the top spot with a 5-3 edge over Detroit, New York broke its homer drought in a 5-4 squeaker past California, Chicago White Sox beat Cleveland 3-2 and Min- nesota whipped Washington 7-3. Lonborg, a 6 - foot - 5 right- hander, used 133 pitches in his TEN-PIN BOWLING NEWS sparkler at Boston. He said he relied primarily on his fast ball for the first seven innings, then went to a sinker. and Steve Whitaker in the vic- tory over the Angels. But it took a sacrifice fly by Elston How- run that snapped a 4-4 tie. Don Mincher had a three-run homer for California. The Yanks' 10- game stretch without a homer was the club's longest since 1944, Curt Blefary crashed a grand- slam homer in the first inning that pointed Baltimore to its triumph. Al Kaline homered for the Tigers and was robbed of another by Blefary's leaping catch in the fifth. Bob Allison drove in three runs with a single and a homer and Harmon Killebrew cracked a two - run homer in leading Minnescta past Washington. Frank Howard had a three-run homer for the Senators in the first but the Twins' Dean Chance stopped Washing, ot without a hit for the next seven innings. Don Buford singled across two runs with one out in the bottom of the ninth and lifted the White Sox over Cleveland. Eddie Mathews was the big leading off the 13th and scored on Aaron Pointer's sacrifice fly in an up-and-down contest. Tom Haller cut short a two- game Los Angeles winning streak by doubling home two runs in the eighth inning off Phil Regan to overcome a 4-3 deficit. iplayers are enlisted, it will be jimpossible to operate a league ifor this age group.
