GA THE OSHAWA TIMES, Twesdey, April 11, 1967 Separate School System Comprises Six Schools The Whitby Separate School _ which today consists of live elementary schools, in addition to Denis. O'Connor High School, had its origin around the turn of the century in a school located at what is now 317 Palace Street. This building has since been turned into a residence. A total of 967 pupils are en- rolled this year in the five ele- mentary schools. The enrol- ment at each school is: St. Bernard's, 161; St. John's, 569: St. Theresa's, 148; St. Leo's, Brooklin, 89. One hundred and _ thirty-five students are enrolled in the Grade 9 to Grade 13 classes at Denis O'Connor High School. There are 31 classrooms the elementary school as lows: St. Bernard's, five; St. John's, 18; St. Theresa's, five and St. Leo's, three. ROTARY SYSTEM It is of interest that St. John's School operates as a senior elementary school -- teaching Grades 7 and 8 from all other schools on a rotary system. Oral French is taught in Grades 5 to 8; while St. John's School is equipped with a library, staffed by a teacher- librarian. The present St. Bernard's School was built in 1925 on property purchased at the inter- section of Dundas and Centre Streets. This was a two-room school until 1950 when a fur- ther two classrooms and an auditorium were added. In 1955 the property on Gif- ford Street was acquired and the firs ~ classrooms of St. John's school erected. This school was increased by a further four classrooms in 1958, four in 1962 and seven class- rooms, a library and a general purpose room in 1966. DENIS O'CONNOR HIGH SCHOOL SERVES LARGE ENROLMENT sages In the meantime, a_ three- classroom school, St. Ther- esa's, was built on Crawforth Street, east of Anderson Street, in 1960. In 1963 the Denis O'Connor School was built to accommodate Grades 9 and 10, operated under the Separate School Board. In 1965 the private Denis O'Connor High School Board was formed and built a five- room school connected with the existing school by a covered walk-way. The school is for the use of Grades 11, 12 and 13 and is operated by the private board. All Grade 9 to 13 students are taught by the same staff and are supervised by the one principal. The Denis O'Connor School, teaching a five-year Arts and Science course, has established high standards in both aca- demic and extra curricular activities.
