After Hero Trojan War Did you know that the name | of Ajax originally was that of. | | | one of the heroes of the Tro- jan war? It was a good choice also for the sprawling munitions | piant that mushroomed on the shores of Lake Ontario near | Pickering in the Second World War. Here, almost overnight, sprung up long lines of build- | ings of Defence Industries Ltd. | manned by thousands of work- | ers from across the Dominion. | From here was shipped vital | ammunition to materially aid| the cause of the free world. Unlike the "ghost plants" of | the First World War, Ajax did | not cease to exist on V-J Day Enterprising citizens and man- ulacturers saw it as an impor- tant link in Ontario's chain of | industries. Their dreams and} hard work have borne fruit. | Today Ajax is a modern electrical town of more than) 10.000 inhabitants devoted to} peaceful pursuits. The munitions project was | served as a direct industrial | customer of Ontario Hydro and} its housing development by Hydro's Oshawa Rural Operat- | ing Area, After the University of To- | ronto finished its temporary | occupancy in March, 1949, | other customers continued to} be served by Oshawa ROA. When the Improvement Dis- trict of Ajax was formed in 1951, the local board of trustees requested Ontario Hydro to establish a separate office in Ajax. This separated Ajax from the surrounding rural area and the Ajax Hydro-Elec- tric System came into being Jan., 1952. PURCHASED BY TOWN The Ajax Hydro-Electric Sys- tem was opened by the Ontario Hydro, in trust for the Improve- ment District of Ajax and ulti- mately the Town of Ajax. This arrangement lasted until the system was purchased by the Town of Ajax on April 30, 1956. As a local system it operated for the balance of the year 1956 under a committee of the Town Council consisting of Mayor K. Smith, Chairman, Deputy Reeve R. G. Conant, Council- Jor R. D. Thompson and Coun- cillor R. D. Thompson and Councillor C. W. Laycock. For- mer Hydro superintendent John J. C. Mackay and other mem- bers of the local staff who transferred under the new arrangement. A' very spirited election took place for a local Hydro Commission at the time of the Civic Elections in De- cember, 1956. As a result, R. G. Conant and E. D. Steer were elected from among the candi- dates. The first official meet- ing of the new Hydro-Electric Commission of the Town of Ajax took place early in Janu- ary of 1957, ' -- AJAX WORKS OF DU PONT OF CANADA LTD. EMPLOYS 225 PEOPLE «+.
