"§ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursdey, February 23, 1967 SPORTS BEAT By Eric Wesslby Times Sports Editor IT junior SHOULD be quite a hockey contest in Peterborough tonight when Petes take on first place Kitchener Rangers. Kitchener has a two-point lead over Tor- onto Marlboros but has a game in hand, which it makes up in this game. Petes are at the other end of the ladder and hold a three-point margin over Oshawa Generals after the same number of games. You can bef Generals will be pulling for Kitchener in this one. SATURDAY NIGHT prom- ises to be a lively one at Civie Auditorium, with 'Peanuts" O'Flaherty and his. St. Catha- rines Black Hawks here to do battle with Generals. There should be a busload of St. Catharines supporters on hand for this one, which also adds to the enthusiasm. Fans who journey from St. Catharines to Oshawa for the games see a far different General team than has performed in their city this season. Coach Ted O'Connor's boys drew a blank in St. Catharines this season. GENERALS EXPECT to hold a light workout tonight, with centre Bill White hoping to take his first turn on the ice since Sunday. White, the club's top point-getter, was working under a handicap Jast weekend, having picked up a knee injury the previous week. The club doctor kept him out of workouts earlier this week to give the injury a chance to recover. One thing's for sure, with White going at full tilt, Generals still have-a chance to grab eighth place and a playoff spot. TORONTO MAPLE Leafs appear determined to turn their recent losing streak - ai "as | ee around and run their winning ways up to 10. Last night they turned in a solid first period, were bad in the second, then won going away in the third against a disorganized Mont- real Canadiens. Toe Blake's Habs have seldom _ looked worse in Toronto, but even so, given a.couple of breaks in the second period they might haye worked better in the third and pulled out a win. JOHNNY BOWER is hot again for Leafs, and he had Lady Luck riding on his shoul- der last night. But, as a for- mer goalkeeping great used to say, "I'd rather be good and lucky than just good." At least twice in the second per- iod, Canadiens had Bower beaten only to have the puck miss the open net. On one rush, Canadiens fired the puck through the goal crease three times. KING CLANCY appears to have what it takes to get 100 per cent production out of Frank Mahovlich. The Big M was flying as his fans know he j can and he appeared to thrive on the extra work tossed his way, although he couldn't buy a goal. He did, however, make good plays to set up goals by Eddie Shack and Ron Ellis. Dave Keon was another going concern for Leafs. His goal was a fluke but he made a dandy play to set up Brian Conacher's marker which completely deflated Montreal. TORONTO MOVES into De- | troit tonight in what has to be the biggest game of the season so far for Red Wings. Detroit trails Leafs and Canadiens by four points but has played two games more than Montreal and three more than Toronto. Chuvalo Impresses:: 31-14 and Students 52-38. With Easy Victory AKRON, Ohio (CP)--George Chuvalo, claiming he is ready for a rematch with world heavyweight champion Cassius Clay, convinced more than 2,400 persons, including his opponent Wednesday night, that it is no} idle boast | The Canadian heavyweight champion from Toronto knocked Dick Wipperman . of Buffalo down four times before referee Tony Chudik awarded Chuvalo a technical knockout in the third round. | "They told me this guy didn't have a right hand," Wipperman said after the fight. "I was the victim of one of the best right hands in the business. "He deserves another chance against Clay." Wipperman, 25, who lost a five-round technical knockout to| Chuvalo in Montreal last year, was down for a mandatory eight count in the second round after taking the worst of the punishment in the first.
