-{Q THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesdey, February 21, 1967 Dear Ann Landers: A few weeks ago you wrote in your rolumn, "Show me a divorced rouple who feel warmly about each other and I will show you a hypocrite or a pair of liars." Then you added, 'There must be an exception somewhere out there in this great big world, but I have never met them." Well, you are meeting them now, Ann Landers. I would like to introduce myself and my ex- husband. Ed and I were divorced many years ago but we remained friendly for the sake of our four children. I moved to San Fran- cisco and remarried. Ed re- married soon after. We've kept in touch and there was never any meanness between us. Last July Ed's wife died. He wrote that he was lonely and didn't want to stay in that big house himself. He invited my husband and me to come and live with him. Since we were barely getting by on our social) security -we decided to go. | So here we are, the three of THE STARS SAY By ESTRELLITA FOR TOMORROW Wednesday will be an auspi- cious period for any work of an initiative character, for unusual enterprises and for concluding pending projects of a business nature. The children are very happy about this arrangement, Ed isn't lonely any more and my husband and I love Seattle. I'm not a hypocrite and I'm not a liar. So pleased to meet you, Ann Landers. What do you have to say now?--Mrs. R. H. Dear Mrs.: I am eating my words. Gulp, Gulp. Dear Ann Landers: Recently you printed a letter from a reader who complained about a friend who leaves the price-tags on gifts. I believe you called it "gauche" or "cloddish" or something like that. I go a step further. I leave the sales slip! What would you call me? I try to select useful gifts. If I goof, I want the re- cipient to exchange it for a gift he can use. A sales slip makes it so much easier for the store as well as for the person who! is doing the returning. | I've been stuck with so many impractical gifts and would have appreciated it if the sender had used my system. Any comment?--Columbus Dear Columbus: The fun of a gift is.to have something that was selected for you by some- one else. If you insist on being so cotton pickin' practical why bother to shop? When they are not, we need to understand and appreciate the many problems they may have to face. We hope, moreover, they won't be- come unduly discouraged. Suppose you are the mother of one or more children and you marry a man who has no children, but is being married for the first time. Suppose your first husband is dead, and that your present husband and you bring up these children. Being a good stepfather won't be easy for him. He did not live with your children' from. the ,'time they were born. He did not have the experience. of helping you guide them in- their earlier years, Consider how difficult it -will be for the stepfather to make tp now for those growing years. You yourself did not have your present husband to Share in the guidance of your children up to now. Will these children of yours warm up to a new father (stepfather)? Will he reciprocate with warmth and affection toward them? Of course, during the months or years you knew these chil- dren were to have this step- father you may have found ways to cultivate in them an acceptance of the man to be- Self - Adjustments Necessary In Becoming A Step - Parent come your new husband and in him acceptance of them. This is sometimes done with great Success. After your present Marriage you may prove skill- ful at cultivating desirable rela- tions between him and your children--a great achievement. SIMILAR PROBLEM Suppose you are the father of one or more children and you marry a woman who has no children. The problems are similar to the foregoing, but who of us know whether these problems will be harder or easier. Suppose from the new mar- riage there come added chil- dren. Then they are "'your chil- dren" and "our children" or -if at your present marriage you and your husband each has one or more children of his or her own. Then the problems may grow harder. ' But if from the present mar-| riage you and your husband) have one or more added chil-| dren, then it is "'your children," "my children" and 'our chil- dren."' Even so, you and I have seen some amazing successes in the bringing up of all these children. We have reason then to be still more amazed. There should be built a monument to commemorate their achieve- ment. Now suppose you marry a/ husband, or both of you, have one or more children, and the posé these children live with the real parents and visit you occasionally. A mother writes: "I am married to a man who has two children--girls 6 and 8." She tells of some of their problems of managing them when they visit her. She is con- cerned about the baby then and is doing wonderfully well under trying circumstances. Who of us in her place might do better? | - Seeing some great successes amid so great difficulties and human problems, we parents who share in the simplest type of family life should take heart when we think we have a few small problems of our own. Those engaged in creative work should have a generally good year, with peri- ods of notable accomplishment indicated in May, June and September. This new year in your life will also be highlighted by excep- tionally pleasant personal rela- tionships, with emphasis on sentimental interests between now and March 1, throughout June and in late October and late December. Do not take the "romances" of May, September or November too seriously, how- ever. The balance of this month will be most auspicious for travel, as will the first three weeks in May, next November and December. You may take several short trips in mid-year, but the aforesaid periods will be better for taking eff on longer journeys. A child born on this day will be endowed with a fine intellect, a charming personality and unusual versatility. Newlyweds Expect Louisiana Dowries PORT ALLEN, La. (AP) -- Dowries may be out of fashion but in this small city across the Mississippi River from Baton Rouge newlyweds: expect them. The parish (county) police jury, the governing body, has approved routinely the distribu- tion of its annual dowries to couples married here last year. Already, the 40 couples were planning what to do with the $85 they each will receive soon. Some plan to pay off bills, others want to buy new clothes or an appliance. 'T think it's a wonderful idea," said Mrs. Joseph C. Cazes, 44, who was married Dec, 16. "I think dowries should definitely be brought back." It started 143 years ago when Julien de LaLande Poydras had $30,000 set aside in his will for dowries to couples in the parish. Legend has it that Poydras did it because his beloved couldn't marry him for lack of a dowry. The police jury has been faithful in keeping tradition, in- vesting the money and using the interest to pay annual dow- ries to couples who married the previous year. The fund has grown to $60,000. Few of the recipients know of the Poydras legend but most newly married couples feel they're entitled to the money. One housewife complained that she missed out 15 years ago br gag her husband didn't ap- ply.
