4 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Saturday, February 18, 1967 SPORTS BEAT. By Eric Wesslby Times Sports E OSHAWA GENERALS and To-onto Marlboros hook up tonight in what has to be termed a "must" game for both teams. Marlboros must win to stay within reach of that coveted first place posi- tion currently held by Kitch- ener Rangers and ahead of the onrushing Hamilton Red Wings, while Generals must win to stay within reach of Peterborough Petes and Mon- treal Junior Canadiens, Gen- erals are well rested for this engagement, not having play- ed since last Sunday in Tor- onto. IN THEIR last start, Gen- erals were jobbed of their first win over Toronto this season, and coach Ted O'Con- nor's charges would like to take ware of that matter to- night. But Marlboros can't be expected to be in the nicest of moods tonight. They are winless in five games, some- thing you don't expect from a team with as much talent as Gus Bodnar has at his dis- posal. Big problem with Marl- boros at the present time is the defence, which isn't play- ing too well. GENERALS ON the other hand got solid back - to-back efforts last weekend and could use a couple more this time. The clubs they're trying to catch hook up in a struggle Sunday night in Montreal and a victory by Generals in both weekend games would really scramble the pudding. If right winger George Babcock can find the range again things will be that much easier. He's none of the big three, Bab- cock, Bill White or Ron Dus- siaume counted a goal in that 6-6 tie with Marlboros. White did -have 'three assists how- ever. INCLUSION OF Ottawa in- to the Ontario Hockey Asso- ciation's Junior "'A" series brings back to hockey one of game's big names, Bill } ley. This observer is too 1g to remember Bill Too- the former Ottawa Sen- . or and Montreal Maroon 'ayer who heads the Ottawa group, but Cowley was a big favorite in the Maritimes dur- ditor ing the late 1930's and. 1940's. He played one season with Ha- lifax in the mid-30's before heading for National League stardom with Boston Bruins. COWLEY WAS a member of one of the all - time great hockey clubs. Yes, Boston has had some good clubs, junior. In 1940 - 41, Bruins put to- gether the longest undefeated record in NHL history, 23 games. Five Boston players were on the first and second all - star teams that season. They were goalkeeper Frank Brimsek, defenceman Aubrey "Dit" Clapper, centre Cowley, left winger Wood Dumart and right winger Bobby Bauer. Centre Milt Schmidt, himself an NHL great, had to take a back seat to Cowley that season. HOCKEY FANS in the dis- trict have a couple of out- standing attractions on tap for Sunday night. At Civic Auditorium, Oshawa Crush- men entertain Cobourg Coug- ars, while in Whitby, Lasco Steelers open their Metro To- ronto Junior "'B" playoffs with Toronto York Steel. I wouldn't want to have to make a choice. While the Crushmen- Cougar game isn't a playoff as such, it's just as import- ant because the teams are battling for the number one spot in the Eastern Ontario Junior '"'B" League. Unfort- unatley, both games start at 7.30 p.m. Oh, well, you can always flip a coin. YOU HAVE to admire the pluck of the Kingston play- ers who gave Crushmen a tough time Friday night be- fore dropping a 6-3 decision. Going on the ice to play a hockey game after being in- volved in an accident was quite a feat in itself and the Frontenacs gave it everything they had for two periods. Crushmen, however, gradual- ly wore down their resistance for a victory. And you have to applaud the hockey fans who sat around for more than two hours waiting for the game to start. Who says there aren't any hockey fans in Oshawa? CLOSE CALL -- Oshawa Crushmen goalkeeper Larry Giguere, centre, gazes af- ter puck he has just def- lected during Friday night's Eastern Ontario Junior 'B' Hockey League game at Civic Auditorium. Kingston players (dark. sweaters) John Kineer, left, and Leo LaVallee (4) look for a pos- sible rebound while Osh- left, and Roger Knowles stand by to help Giguere until a de- awa's Phil Solomon, fenceman arrives. Crush- men won the game 6-3 to regain sole possession of first place, two points up on Cobourg Cougars, who play Crushmen here Sunday night. --Oshawa Times Photo By THE CANADIAN PRESS Post performance count at the race track, but they don't seem to help Detroit Red Wings. The Wings have on their roster five of the 11 National Hockey League players who have scored 250 goals or more during their careers, but they are not performing up to stand- ard. After losing their last three games, the Wings have 250-goal scorer Andy Bathgate and four others on the bench--apparently for non-production. The slump came after the Wings had won eight out of nine to move past Toronto Maple Leafs into fourth place. Now they're back in fifth spot. Coach Sid Abel has shuffled his players around like a deck of cards most of the season in an effort to put a few more winning combinations together, something he hopes his club can start doing tonight when the weekend games as a result of a three-game suspension he re- ceived Wednesday for a tussle with an NHL official. He had only three goals and four assists in 48 games this year. NEILSON DOUBTFUL Defenceman Jim Neilson is a doubtful starter. Take Friday night. The Nationals took on Kit- chener Rangers in an Ontario Hockey Association Junior A game and took a 5-0 battering that shot the Rangers back into first place. It's been that way all season -- the Nationals are holding down fifth spot in the 'nine- team circuit, 10 points out of first place, but have allowed 194 goals while scoring only 169. Only the teams that trail them have allowed more goals than they have scored. In the only other game Fri- day night, Niagara Falls Flyers missed a shutout by less than three minutes as they dropped St. Catharines Black Hawks 3-1. Kitchener poured 58 shots on London goaltender Ron Marlow as the Rangers moved two points ahead of Toronto Marl- boros in the scramble for first place. Whitby missed the playoff trail last year in a drastic sea- son. This year, they enjoyed a much better season, finishing in third spot. A better goals- against average gave the edge to Weston, who thus took sec- ond place, behind Markham, who won top honors. LAVENDER TOP SCORER Tommy Lavender, the league's scoring champ, with a total of 86 points on 32 goals and 54 assists, will be out to show just why he is the best in the league. This little fellow, who could be in his final year of Junior hockey, has been a big spark plug for coach Cherry and Manager Davie this season. Not far behind the perform- ance of Lavender, comes Ken Knapton, who made a late-sea- 'son bid to take all the honors but fell a little short. He picked up a league-leading 38 goals and 35 assists, for a total of 73 points. Al Quintillian had 60 points and Paul Reid had 59 to give Whitby four players in "the top ten' for scoring honors. Lascos expect to be at full strength with the exception of team captain Paul Reid, who is still sidelined with a bruised kidney, suffered in a game here almost two weeks ago. It is expected that Reid may miss the first round of the playoffs. Mike Taylor has been taking Reid's place on the front line and has played well. The big line of Knapton, Quintillian and O'Donaghue is expected to be heard from a lot, as is the line of Taylor, Lavender and Vi- pond. The third line of Keenan, Mc- Cord and Paterson has come along exceptionally well in the 'Battle Of Steelers' Opens 'B' Playoffs On defence, Whitby is strong, with Cheesman, Boyd, Sori- chetti and a young rookie from Ajax, Chuck Gyles. RELIABLE GOALIE In goal there is no problem for coach Cherry, as the re- liable Ralph Moore is there with the big pads and his capable understudy, Doug Min- aker, is ready and waiting for a shot at the best. | York Steelers, while a sixth- place finisher, have always pro- vided the Lascos with more than a share of trouble and word out of their camp is that they expect to eliminate their counter part, Lasco Steelers, in short order. Four Prelims Here March 1 Hear the sound? That's Pret- ty Boy Felstein coming to Osh- awa and bringing with him the first professional boxing card since the early 1930's. Felstein, the number one contender for George Chuvalo's Canadian Heavyweight b o x ing crown, will be fighting Bob Slaughter of Philadelphia. "Pretty Boy's" main 10 round- er also brings with it a strong supporting card, in the form of four preliminaries, including a main six - round preliminary for $500. The two preliminary bouts will see Gary St. Germaine go agai in the welterweight division and "Tiger Red Mullin against Rog- er Thibeault in the heavyweight division, also for four. rounds. Mullin will be turning pro for this card. Frankie Bullard Jr. will go against Gordie Baldwin in the semi-final for a $500 purse, if Balwin wins. The money en- tered the picture when Bullard, who's manager challenged Fel- stein to a match for $500 or Hugh Mercier for four rounds! crossing in Bowmanville and the truck completely burned and the bus partially burned. Although the Oshawa club found itself with four men in the penalty box at one time in the third period, it did not stop them. Crushmen picked up two points to move ahead of Co- bourg Cougars, who tied Belle- ville Thursday night. Oshawa leads the league with 37 points and Cobourg has 35. Laframboise scored the only goal of the first period but the score could easily have been tied had it not been for goalie Larry Giguere. Feeley had a clear cut break away but Giguere came up with the key save. This was of some satisfaction as Giguere played for Kingston at one time. The rest of the period was spent in fast rushes by both teams, due to hustle and few stoppages of play. As an exam- ple, play was stopped only twice in the first nine minutes of play. Kingston played hard in the second period as they did in the first and although they outshot the opposition, they could only manage a 2-2 split in goals, to leave the score at 3-2 at the end of the period. ; McFarland tied the score at the 7.12 mark, when he put in a goal from the left of the net, on a shot that deflected in off Don Bowen's leg. Solomon came back two min- utes later, however, to put Osh- awa back in the lead to stay. The Oshawa captain took a pass from Knowles and scored on a shot that was taken from a sharp angle' and went in off the inside of the goal post. The goal came on the first "shawa shot of the period. Oshawa's third shot of the period also resulted in a goal for Knowles 17 seconds later, but Kingston gave one last ef- fort to catch up with Feeley's scoring a power play goal. Webb made the score 4-2 at jthe 6.11 mark of the third per- iod and Clayton make it 5-2 ex- actly two minutes later on the smoothest goal of the game. Clayton, Peter Landers, Ger- ry and Walmsley combined in a pass play that terminated with Clayton pulling Kingston goalie, John Coates and flipping the puck behind him. Knowles scored his second {of the night while the teams were playing four aside. Kingston scored the last goal of the game on another power play, as Graham put the puck away. SLAP SHOTS. ..
