'On Mu Dear Ann Landers: I am writing about the most useless bit of advice any counsellor ever handed out. Please, Ann, put an end to the phoney idea that the way to get along with a fellow is to learn about his gpecial interests and participate with him. "I fell for this applesauce and it just about wrecked me. .. 1 started to go with Jack. He was nutty over drag racing. I decided to learn all I could about drag racing so I could be part of his life. I spent hun- dreds of boring hours watching drag races. I met dozens of irls who were also bored, but ey were there for the same reason--to please a boy friend. = I went to one drag party after another and watched a bunch of ereeps make fools of them- selves. Finally I decided to stop knocking myself out for the jerk. Now I'm going with a fine fellow whose interests are more like mine--which is the way it ought to be. Wevenjoy music and art and hiking and just talking. When I think of the time and energy I wasted on the drag nut I could kick my- self from here to China-- Ashamed To Sign ~Dear Ashamed: Rewarding relationships are based on what people can share. Similarity of interests is an ideal starting point. If a girl finds herself ANN LANDERS Friendship Is Based tual Interests win every argument. I have tried to tell brother he'd better shape up or his life will be ruined. He says: '"Take care of your own life and don't nag me." What can I do? -- Worried Sweet Sixteen Dear Worried Sixteen: your parents to see that brother gets professional help. He is a goner unless somebody gets in there and fast. The major cause of deteriora- tion is delayed laundering. A lot of people do not know how '0 tackle the job properly. Any- |thing worn next to the body should be laundered after every few wearings. The majority of modern sur- gical braces and appliances are specifically designed for easy washing in suds. Many such items are made so that their fabric belts and some panels can be completely detached for separate laundering. A brace or appliance should never be twisted, wrung or held up by one end while wet. Sup- port it with both hands while squeezing it through the suds. Then it should be rinsed in clean water at least two or three times--again using the support- and-squeeze method. Let the water drain off well then roll it in a turkish towel to blot up excess moisture. Dry at room temperature, gently smoothing and stretching the appliance to its original shape. MOST WASHABLE Supplementary materials used in a brace or appliance for support or comfort--such as metal, plastic or foam or sponge rubber--are almost always just as washable as the fabric itself. However, there are some ap- pliances made today that can- not be immersed in water. If there is leather or a part is covered: with leather in any surgical appliance, the leather should be only surface-washed with thick "dry" suds and rinse- wiped with a damp cloth or sponge. Any auxiliary plastic or metal surfaces can, of course, be washed off with a cloth wrung out of sudsy water. In a rare instance 'where leather and fabric are used together, the cloth can be scrubbed on the surface and rinsed the same way. WILTED LETTUCE ITALIANG Tear crisp western iceberg lettuce into bite - size pieces; mound in shallow bowl. Add some strips of dry salami, ripe olive rings and snipped chives or green onion tops to bottled Italian dressing; heat. Pour hot dressing over lettuce. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese; serve at once. HOUSEHOLD HINT When sewing cotton corduroy, finish seams by pinking. This prevents fabric from shredding nap. | | BOLD AND TRIM tion because of two factors -- it is trim looking and it will be equally at home with whatever wardrobe aptly fits the business or sports occasion.
