27 THE vsrbicesi bis besten Wednesday, February 1, 1967 World Figure Skating Fixed Says Former World Champ TORONTO (CP)--Otto Jelinek of Bronte, Ont., a professional figure-skater who once won a world amateur title, says "many world titles over the years have been pre-arranged." Jelinek, writing in The Tele- gram from Charlotte, N.C., gave instances. He and his sister Maria' turned professional after cap- turing the pairs crown at the 1962. world championships in Prague. "You may ask why I kept silent about these things when still competing,"' he wrote. "The explanation is simple. An amateur skater is not al- lowed to say what he would like. If he does, he gets into deep trouble." BAN REVERSED "The story appeared following two other instances of upheaval in international skating. The International Skating Un- jon, ruling body of the amateur sport, announced that George Gross, Telegram sports writer, would not be issued credentials to cover the world champion- ships in Vienna next month. The ISU made the decision after Gross wrote that world titles were occasionally won through nightclub deals and that Cana- dian skaters had to be at least 10-per-cent better than Euro- pean rivals to win champion- ships. Later, Eislauf - Verein, the host club in Vienna, confirmed by wire to The Telegram that Gross would be accredited. Earlier, Dr. Suzanne Mor- row Francis of Toronto was suspended as an_ international judge for one year on a charge of "'nationalism."" The ISU said that at last year's champion- ships Dr. Francis was the only judge among nine to award Donald Knight of Dundas, Ont., high marks in world competi- tion. Knight is Canadian senior men's champion. DIDN'T WIN IN 1956 Wrote Jelinek: "Toronto's Norris Rowden Distribution Poor In Cuba HAVANA (Reuters) -- Cuban authorities are making strenuous efforts to overhaul a faulty dis- tribution system under which too many consumer goods are sent to some parts of the island and too few to others. Some areas have received goods for which they have little or no use while others in need _ have received none at Well aware of the problem, authorities are decentralizing the distribution network and setting and hi had be in 1954 "But Olymp up local centres to study the individual needs of each region. Cuba's internal economic sit- uation is dominated by severe shortages arising from the United States blockade and a lack of hard currency. But weaknesses in the distri- bution system and a lack of re- frigeration in storage facilities play havoc with goods and food supplies, For example, fresh milk now is off the ration list in the Pinar del Rio area only 110 miles from Havana, while in the cap- ital the ration has. been re- stricted to children under two years old. Milk is also no longer rationed in the Camaguey area in east- ern Cuba, but in both Camaguey and Pinar del Rio the meat ration has been reduced to half @ pound every two weeks, com- pared with the regular three- quarters of a pound a week in Havana. At some times of the year there is so much fruit in some parts of the country that it lies rotting in shops and along the country lanes. At other times _ is no fruit for months on end. Another case . . . is that of a European skater in 'he early 1950s who was told 'y an official of the Interna- 'ional Skating Union long before the competition that she would be the next singles world cham- pion. swer was because her home town."
