6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Saturday, January 28, 1967 SPORTS BEAT: By Eric Wesslby Times: Sports Editor The way things are going in Guy Allen, however, be- Oshawa Generals might run out of players before they run out of games, During the past two weeks, Generals have lost four players, three in as many games. It's getting so bad that coach Ted O'Connor just turns his head and hopes whenever a player makes contact with a goalpost or the boards. Already beset with more troubles than any coach has a right to be, O'Connor, and the Generals, got more bad news yesterday when Chris Hayes checked in with the doctor. X-RAYS DISCLOSED TORN ligaments in the right leg, plus possible cartilage trouble. He will undergo an operation Monday and he's through for the season. He joins goalkeep- er Ian Young in_ hospital. Others .sidelined are defence- man Barry Wilkins and for- ward Danny Sandford. Gen- erals wounded list is starting to resemble the war bulletins. There's hospital cases and walking wounded. IF O'CONNOR wants to moan, he'll have company at Civic Auditorium tonight in the person of Walter "Turk" Broda. coach of London Na- tionals. Nats come here to- . night with a few players ham- pered with injuries. Star cen- tre Gary Ungera and winger Brian Murphy both have shoulder 'separations and de- fenceman Gary Sherwood is through for the season with a torn cartilage. Nats picked up & replacement for Sherwood cause Sherwood was injured in an Ontario Hockey Associ- ation Emergency Fund game. SPEAKING OF OHA Emer- gency Fund games (wasn't that a sneaky way to get into the subject) coach Eddie Bush of Hamilton Red Wings is ex- pecting a good hockey game here Monday when he brings the OHA Junior "A" League All-Stars to Civic Auditorium for a tussle with Generals. The addition of Derek San- derson and Bill Little to the Generals roster gives O'Con- nor added firepower, some- thing the club needs. O'CONNOR said yesterday he plans to use emergency replacement Rock Farr for half the game Monday and Niagara Falls' Bruce Durno the other half. O'Connor was pleased with Farr's perfor- mance Thursday and if he can stay hot the rest of his stay the Generals will be around when that playoff shooting starts. STILL no definite word on Ian Young's condition. He had the bandages removed from over his eyes yesterday and the doctor was to check again today. Even so, he'll be out another week, at least. Wilkins hopes to start skating this weekend and will squeeze a stint in between the All- Star Game dinner and the game itself. Jack Adams, head of the Central Profes- sional Hockey League, is guest speaker for the dinner Monday. Judy Henderson, 20, and John Baily, 22, both of Toronto, were right behind them with three firsts and 141.4 points. The first round of the seniors, made up of seven compulsory moves, was marred. when judges ruled Alexis and Dr. Chris Shields of Toronto did not complete one element. The Shields, who finished third with 64.6 points, were penalized because they did not perform the circular steps. Anna Forder, 15, and Ricky Stephens, 18, both of Port Perry, Ont., were second. The only national title decided Friday night was in junior men's competition. Bob Emerson, 18, of Toronto came from behind to win it He was in second place going into the final round, but the leader, David Coffin, 17, of Vancouver fell twice during his solo. In the morning round, Valerie Jones, 18, of Toronto scored seven firsts in the compulsory figures to take the lead in the senior women's competition, The freestyle . final will be skated Sunday. Miss Jones, who finished sec- ond in women's national com- petition last year to Petra Burka of Toronto, was awarded 1041.1 points after the gruelling, six-figure competition. Trailing Quinte McFarlands 1-0 after a lack-lustre first per- iod, Crushmen broke loose for three second period goals as they went on to record a 4-2 victory and take a_ two-point lead over second place Peter- borough Don Byes. Garry Bradley worked. his way to a pair of goals in that second period and Phil Solo- mon, the club's top goal scor- er, added another. Roger Knowles sank the clincher in the third period on a neat com- bination with Ron Webb. Quinte goals went to Ernie Sharpe and Doug Potts. Although he failed to score, Jerry Walmsley of the Crush- % men earned elevation to the junior "A" Generals 'or to- night's game: with London Na- tionals. Walmsley worked hard all evening and was hauled |, down twice just as he broke 4 around the defence with the puck. Goalkeeper Larry Giguere took over for regular Dave -, Gavel and turned in a steady performance for coach Bob Dionne's contingent. He had to be especially sharp in the first period as McFarlands control- led play and Crushmen were fortunate they only trailed by one at the intermission. McFarlands were late arriv-| ing because of road conditions lbut they made up for their/Skipped by Oscar Parker and tardiness when the game start- ed Crushmen couldn't get any- thing going in the first period as they fell behind on an early goal when Giguere went to the ice too soon during a scramble. Although they enjoyed an oda- man for four minutes at one stage, Crushmen couldn't gen- erate much of an attack, and what they did present was foil- rester. Solomon, unchecked in front of the Quinte net, converted Knowles' pass early in the sec- ond on a play started by Webb, tying the score, and Bradley put Crushmen ahead 'with his first goal during a power play. Potts got that one back for Quinte but Bradley converted Don Bowen's shot from the blueline. Seconds later, Bradley hit the goalpost, a feat he dupli- cated later in the period. The final goal was the nicest. Knowles gave the puck to Webb at centre and then broke for the net, arriving in time to steer in the return pass.
