Such a titanic force could come from: still-undiscovered-- but theorized--sub-nuclear partl- cles called "quarks." Some physicists believe that such particles exist within the nuclei, or hearts, of atoms and that they constitute the long: sought basic building stones of all matter in the universe. Indeed, these physicists say, the hypothetical quarks may even be the keystones to the basic forces of nature, such as gravity, They long have said that the U.S. should build its proposedif $375,000,000 atom smasher, Wes- ton, Ill, was selected Friday as site of the device. The Atomic Energy Commis- sion has neither confirmed nor denied that its huge machine might settle once and for all whether quarks exist. But its scientists have indicated re- peatedly that a machine of such eneigy wold for an indefinite time offer science its most pow- erful tool for tapping the secrets of matter. Only a generation ago, the atomic nucleus was thought to consist of only two kinds of par- ticles -- neutrons and protons.
