Herbert, minister of King Street United Church, iconducted the service, Inter. ment was in Oshawa Union Brampton Contractors = Big In Racing Game E> DAVE MILLER BRAMPTON, Ont. The van. racing stable of the three Armstrongs from Brampton all began with some fancy horse-trading by one of Canada's top wheeler-dealers. Elgin Armstrong, who pone it his first standardbred in 1948, decided in 1952 it was time to buy another, He looked around Bh ng and then travelled to Ben White Raceway in Florida where the now-famous driver Del Miller was training, "I potted a little trotting filly and followed her to the stable," Elgin recalls. "I asked Miller 'Is this mare for sale?' and he said 'Yes' and I said 'How much?' and he said '$12,000," "T thought that over fora while and I asked him to work her because I wanted to see her trot, Finally I said 'I'll give you $7,500 for the mare and pay you to train her plus I'll give you. whatever she makes between $7,500 and $12,000." "You know, he took it and I looked at the mare and said: 'I've just bought the Hambletonian winner.' The mare's name was Hel- icopter and in 1953 she won the Hambletonian, trotting's Kentucky Derby, in three heats. USED FOR BREEDING Helicopter was the begin- ning of a 300-horse stable now owned jointly by Ted, Elgin and Charles Armstrong. She was the first great brood mare the Armstrongs owned. After Helicopter was retired, she was crossed with various studs to try to find a winning combination. "She didn't throw much," said Charlie. "The first three foals svere used as brood mares." But the fourth foal, sired by Star's Pride, was named Armbro Flight in 1962. The Flight has been des- "| eribed as the greatest trotter of all. Few would argue with Charlie's more modest claim that she is the greatest of her sex. In three short seasons she has won $493,602, the most money ever won by a Can- adian trotter and the second most won by a Canadian horse. Northern Dancer, the thoroughbred owned by Tor- onto industrialist E. P. Tay- lor, is the leader with more than $580,000. On Sept. 20, 1965, Flight trotted the mile in 1:59 1-5 at Delaware, Ohio, to set a world record for a half-mile track. As a two-year-old in 1964, Armbro Flightmade 25 starts, winning 20 and never finishing worse than third, She earned $107,452 and won the Canadian standardbred futurity trot at Toronto's Greenwood track in one of her rare Canadian ap- pearances. WINS INTERNATIONAL She started 26 times in 1965, winning 22 with two seconds and a third. She was second by a head in the Ham- dletonian to Egyptian Candor in a race that marked the first time in 34 years a four- heat Hambletonian was held. Her efforts this year have been just as successful. At Roosevelt July 9, Flight trot- ted in 2:31 3-5 to beat French champion Roquepine and win the $100,000 International Trot over 1% miles. Her time was just one-fifth of a second off the world record for the dis- tance. Driver and trainer Joe O'Brien of Alberton, P.E.1., retired her after 13 starts because she was lame in her left foreleg. "Joe thought it happened before the International," El- gin said, "So we turned her out to the grass at Shafter, Joe's farm in Northern Cali- fornia. "She's looking real good now, her leg's not swelling and Joe thinks she'll be back next year." The Armstrongs and O'Brien, 48, first got together in 1962 when Del Miller, then trainer for the Armstrongs, decided he had too many horses to handle. "T said to Del 'What about Joe?' and he told me it would be a good move to hire him so I did," Elgin said. 'He's a damn good driver, one of the best." PICKED BY O'BRIEN Both Miller and O'Brien came to the Armstrong farm near Brampton to look over the yearlings in 1962. 'Joe picked oat some to take to his farm for training and one of these was Armbro Flight," | Elgin said, The Armstrongs' ABC farm is actually eight separate ranches for mares, studs, yearlings and aged pacers and trotters. At present they have 40 yearlings in training and maintain a "his - a ers" farm near Caledon, Ont., where fillies and colts are kept in separate areas. Elgin was one of the first men in North America to recognize the importance of mares sired by Adios for brood stock. He "has 35 Adios mares on the farm now and is on the watch for more. The Armstrongs went to the sales this year at Harris- burg, Pa., and bought four Cemetery. . The pallbearers were Ax Cox, David Cox, Bill me : 9 i horses for $154,000: One is Beautiful Hanover, a full sis- ter to pacing champion Bret Hanover, and another is a full brother to Scot Frost. (CP). -~< "I figure Beautiful Hanover was the besi bargain," Eigin said. "She's by Adios out of the Hanover tits, It's great family, I expect her to earn 225.000 in her racing career and bring $50,000 as a brood mare." Armbro Adanac..
