Charles Henry,| THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, December 7, 1966 25 By THE CANADIAN PRESS Bring together one of the world's foremost painters of birds and a renowned natural- ist and the product of their collaboration is likely to be a delight for the bird-fancier. Such a result is Birds of the Northern Forest (McClelland and Stewart), a handsome book produced by artist J. Fenwick Lansdowne and nat- uralist - conservationist John A. Livingston, The paintings and drawings of 56 birds are by Lansdowne, a native of Hong Kong who first gained fame while living in Victoria and whose bird paintings now hang in major galleries and museums throughout the world. The lively, stimulating de- scriptions that convey a sense of discovery felt by a bird- watcher when he has found a new species are by Living- ston, who has studied birds in 27 «countries. FIRST OF SERIES In this first volume of a series that ultimately will cover the major Canadian en- vironments for birds, the se- lection has been made from those living in the great ever- green forest of North America «whether from the treeless tundra south to central Iberta and Saskatchewan, the north shore of Lake Superior or the Gaspe. For this beautifully-executed volume, Lansdowne did the paintings from skins lent by the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. Each color plate is preceded by a page of pre- liminary pencil studies and is accompanied by a note on place and month of capture. The six-color lithographs were done in Italy where the book was printed and bound. Livingston's expert knowl- edge of the birds is shown in such comments as this, deal- ing with the black-throated blue warbler: "Just as minute particles in the atmosphere scatter out the shorter wave-lengths of visible light and give the sky its blue appearance, tiny air- filled cavities in the feathers Birds Of Northern Forest First Volume Of Series A century of eating and drinkiag is described in The Centennial.
