Countdown MOST COMPLIMENTARY? ) SHE THOUGHT I SHOULD QUIT THE FIRM AND BECOME A PROFESSIONAL DANCER? DID YOU SEE ME wees WITH THE YOUR HEALTH Ingrowing Hairs May Be Hereditary By JOSEPH G. MOLNER, MD North having overcalled your diamond bid with a heart. North leads the king of hearts. would you play'the hand? @ac aQ74 Sraior (™B] Pree BATOSL 5 $6 1. To give yourself the best chants, you must sonsider the possibility of one opponent's hav: four diamonds to the jack, In line with this, you play ace, the ten of. hearts on the then cash the king of. hearts king of spades, and ace of dia- monds, and follow all this by finessing the nine of hearts. Now you cash the queen of hearts and ace of spades, dis- carding the K-Q of diamonds from dummy! You then play the ten of diamonds to force ¢ gt i:/the jack, and this is the only ick you lose. If the diamonds turn out to be divided 3-2, this method of play will have cost you a trick worth 30 points, but if the dia- monds turn out to.be divided 4-1, you will be perhaps 1,000 or 1,500 points better off, de- pending on vulnerability. 2. You start with seven quick tricks and the problem is to build up two more without plac- . ing the contract in jeopardy. If . you were to take the ace of hearts and enter dummy with a diamond in order to lead the queen of clubs and finesse, you j|could go down if North's hand looked something like this: Spade, J102; hearts, KQ1096; \diamonds, 5; clubs, K1083. He would take the king of clubs and shift to the jack of spades, and you would go down at least one. The sure way of making the contract is to lead a low club towards dummy at trick. two, Tf North has the king and takes it, you play low from dummy and now have nine' tricks. If South has the king and takes it, you are up to eight tricks and can easily make a ninth by leading towards the jack of hearts. If North has the king of clubs and does not take it, you win the trick in dummy with the queen and. develop your -ninth trick later in hearts. - POPULARITY ENDS SHOW GLASGOW (CP) -- A trade. boosting "Danish week" planned to take place in Scot- land at the end of November had to be cancelled because the response from Scandinavian firms was too great. So many companies wanted to participate that the organizers couldn't fit them all in. DR. MOLNER--Cont. even hysterical disorder. Kind of aut bil 42, Analloy Dear Dr. Molner: Can any- thing be done about ingrown hairs of legs and arms They are not caused by shaving but appear to be hereditary and are so numerous as to be very dis- figuring. --Mrs. K. R. P. It may well. be hereditary. One cause involves the angle at which the hair shafts crow so as to make the hair penetrate the skin. Another possible cause is.a skin condition called keratosis pilaris, a thickening of the skin at the outlet of the hair follicle, preventing the hair shaft from protruding properly, and thus causing it to curl up under the skin. Skin softeners, such as cold cream, may help. In other instances ointments containing a little salicylic acid may be used to dissolve the plugging area of skin. Whitfield's oint- ment might also be tried. If this irritates the skin, your doctor can give you a more dilute preparation. Dear Dr. Molner: Please ex- plain 'hot flashes' which I am enduring and what causes them. How long do they last--W. G. Hot flashes are the common- est- of all symptoms of meno- pause, or change of life, with the exception of cessation of the menstrual cycle itself. In menopause your ovaries are ceasing the production of female hormones, and -this abrupt change in the chemical balance of your body can affect the nervous system. Therefore the automatic controls of blood circulation close to the surface can be briefly disrupted, cause a hot flash and sometimes its opposite, a chill. The more abrupt the cessation As to how long the hot flashes last, this is unpredictable. With proper treatment they are usu- ally controlled very easily. Oth- erwise they may go on for a couple of years -- sometimes longer, but that's a rough esti- mate for the duration of the most annoying phases. Dear Dr. Moiner: A friend's child had an infected ear and came down with a fever of 105. She was advised to put the child in a bath of cold water several times a day, for a half hour. The child turned purple each time. Isn't this rather drastic Isn't there something else that can be done in such a situation --Mrs. F. E. H. Cold water may be extreme. You don't say how cold. Tepid water--warm to the touch yet cooler than skin temperature-- is sufficient to reduce fever, Tepid sponge baths with water or alcohol (at room tempera- ture) are satisfactory and pref- erable to plunging into cold water. Dear Dr: Molner: What is known about. torticollis of the neck Is it hereditary or related to pressure on nerves in the upper spine? Or perhaps from an injury? What is the general outlook when therapy has failed to. improve the condition--C, R. The term itself means twisted neck--tortus, or twisted, and collum, neck. In short, wry neck, or one that is twisted to one side. Your question is hard to an- swer because torticollis may be congenital, or it. may be from an acquired disorder of the neck, spine or muscles. It can be from injury of some sort. CALL of activity by the ovaries, the more likely are the hot flashes, In addition, may times it may be the result of iy nervous or BRUCE MACKEY ALDERMAN @ learn the issues @ talk to the candidates @ express your ideas BRUCE MACKEY WANTS TO TALK TO You 576-2240 24 HOURS A DAY FOR
