The game remained a ground! battle, as only a handful of passes were completed, giving the stronger Redmen team a decided advantage. O'Neill will now travel to Pe- terborough to meet Kenner Col- legiate for a game Friday af- ternoon to decide the COSSA Junior 'A' championship, If Redmen hope to win this one they will have to improve their offense, Kenner is noted for the number of touchdowns they can score and O'Neill can- not hope to match them unless they co-ordinate their attack, Francais And Tigres On Top In the French Canadian Hockey League doubleheader on Sunday, Canadien Francais defeated Acadiens 6-1 while Les Tigres triumphed over Alouet- tes, 3-1, Bob Cloutier and Roger Goul- et, with two apiece, paced Fran- eais to their victory, with G, Lacachelle and J, P, Tanguay getting singletons. Editor Kitchener Rangers' coach Wally Kullman waited until well into the last minute of before he pulled his goalie sent six attackers charging into the Oshawa Generals' wr- rit -- then an Oshawa fender tried for the open net }from behind his own blue line instead of taking two steps for- ward into the centre-ice zone-- Hcalled for "icing" and on the resuiting faceoff, Kitchener scored a@ peculiar goal -- to make the score 2-2 at the 19:40 mark of the final period, That's. how Saturday night's game at the Civic Auditorium }wound up, as Rangers moved up into a tie for third place, with Hamilton Red Wings while Oshawa Generals tem- porarily moved alongside the league-leading St. Catharines Biack tiawks. St. Catharines regained un- disputed possession of the top rung on Sunday with their 6-3 victory over Toronto Marlboros, leaving the Generals alone in second place, two points behind, with a total of 12, one more than Kitchener and Hamilton, ACTION A LITTLE DULL A contingent of enthusiastic Kitchener rooters, who came to yell for their team and the usual vociferous urgiag of the Oshawa '"'faithful" served, to- gether with the sustained close- ness of the score, to provide some proportion of customary Junior hockey excitement to what was otherwise,. a dull game, Clean-cut passing plays were as scarce as goals and with both teams almost ignoring position play for a helter-skelter brand of checking, it developed real early in the first period to a glorified display of shinny and but for infrequent flashes, re- mained at that level for almost the full 60 minutes. There were a few robust de- fensive tactics employed, re- sulting in penalties for charg- ing, slashing and cross-checking but apparently referee Hughie McLean took a more tolerant attitude to such goings-on as time progressed -- there wasn't even one penalty meted out in the third period, What would likely have drawn a penalty instead resulted in the need for first aid treatment to Kitchener's Wayne Gowing. He and Jim Krulicki both took dead aim at Danny Sandford, along the west boards, inside the visitors' blue-line, The Osh- awa forward saw them coming in time and adroitly slipped out of the way. Gowing and Kru- licki crashed each other into the boards, with the forming suffer- ing a two-stitch cut and a bang on the nose from Kru- licki's broken stick, In all, there were only seven penalties handed out and the visitors drew five of them, TWO FOR BEVERLEY Rangers opened the scoring midway through the initial per- jod, shortly after Brian Morenz had hit.the goal post with his slap shot, after snaring a loose puck at the blue-line. Don Luce got the first Kitchener goal, on a three-way play with Jack. McCreary and 'Tim' Ecclestone. McCreary was their best up front and Ec- clestone figured in both of their scoring plays. Oshawa tied it up with the only goal of the second stanza, when Nick Beverley fired from just inside the blue- line, at centre. Peter Nevin appeared to deflect the puck, en route, but the official scoring listed the goal to Beverley, un- assisted. Generals enjoyed a distinct edge in this period but could only manage the one goal, Ron Dussiaume and Morenr }both fanned on good chances, jwhile John Barber was serving | de-|to Bill White, who was on the a tripping penalty, five minutes before Beverley's goal. The final frame wasn't two minutes old before Beverley had put Generals in front 2-1, This was a pretty goal, started by George Babcock with a pass to Beverley, Nick in turn passed left flank, at the time, White made a pretty return pass to Beverley, in front of the net and the Oshawa rearguard gave goalie "Robbie" Irons no chance, POOR CLEARING COSTLY For almost 18 minutes, Gen- erals enjoyed their slim lead and despite the fact they were being pressured, it appeared as if they would hold out, Finally, after "the last min- ute of piay" had deen an- nounced, a face-off, for "icing," brought another faceoff in the Osha end. In the closing thing, as the Generals elected to fire the puck from their own zone, rather than first get it out over their own end, before shooting it. With about 40 seconds left, coach Wally Kullman finally pulled his goalie, in favor of six attackers. One Oshawa de- fender elected to try for the open net -- again instead of coming out 'of his own end first -- the puck missed the net a was again brought back for " ic ng." From this faceoff, a scramble ensued which saw Kitchener get the tying goal. It was a questionable play, Goalie Young had gone to the ice to smother the puck, at his own left-hand goal post, From the press box, it ap: peared as if the puck was out|tick of sight long enough to war- rant calling the play but per- haps referee McLean, from his much closer position, could see the puck, Sheldon Kannageisser went in behind the prostrate goalie to scrape the puck out from under- neath Young and into the net. At the same moment, Kanna- geisser Was DOWiea iio the goal, which came off its post and fell towards the back- boards, Some fans figured that dis- placing the goal should have meant "no goal' but it did appear as if Kannageiser pulled the puck over the goal-line, just before the net was toppled, Some of 'the Generals pro- avail -- and so the Generals and Rangers divided the spoils.
