HIS HIGHNESS HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO COMPLAIN ABouT THIS MORNING YOUR HEALTH Analysis Can Show Kidney Stone Cause By JOSEPH G. MOLNER, MD _ Dear Dr. Molmer: I am 71 and in the last 30 years have) poli had three kidney stone attacks. The second was in 1961, the last in 1965. Eath time I apparently passed the stones as x-rays showed kidneys and tubes clear. Does something I eat or drink cause stones? I eat all kinds of dairy products, and drink two or three glasses of milk a day. We use well water which has some hardness. Would you sug- gest bottled spring water?-- J. 3. M. I can sympathize with anyone for not wanting a repeat per- formance of kidney stones. True, some small ones pass very easily, and we may not even be aware of them, but when one has to force its way th h a ureter, it can hurt like sin. Unfortunately we cannot al- ways trace the cause of such t » but sometimes we can get a very useful clue if they are examined. YW you have another -- let's hope you don't, though -- it should be analysed. If it con- sists of chemicals called urates, then medication to reduce uric acid in your system will be effective. But if the stone is high in calcium,- then you might be} wise to reduce the quantity of/ dairy products. I am not saying that you should give them up entirely. In fact, I am hesitant to advise reduction of dairy products for anyone unless there. is a defi- nite and proven need of it. Cal- cium is a necessity for good health, and for nearly all of us milk and milk products are ex- cellent foods and a source 'of calcium. Therefore I follow a of saying "go slow" in giving them up on the slim chance that they might be factor. Usually they aren't. One more measure is import- ant, and that is drinking plenty of water to keep the urine dilute, it is concentrated urine. not dilute, which has the ten- dency to form stones. Whether the water is hard or soft makes no difference. I assume that your well water is not contami- nated, and that you have it tested periodically. But that's a matter of general health and has nothing to do with kidney stones. Dear Dr. Molner: Following a thyroid operation, I had head- aches and later mild diabetes. Do you think the surgery was a factor in the diabetes?-- J. J. K. No. I don't think so--just a coincidence, Dear Dr. Molner: Do you have a remedy for bites? I can't walk out of my door from May to October without an in- sect biting me. I enclose a list of the things I use.--Mrs. W. W. I note that all the things, from caladry! to baking soda, are for use afterwards, but there's no mention of repellents to keep you from being bitten. These repellants are quite ef- fective. Why don't you start using one next spring?
