True, the American League has had Mickey Mantle, but since Ted Williams quit, it's been Mantle-against a crop that included' Willie Mays, Henry 'Aaron, Stan Musial, Eddie Mat- thews, Warren Spahn, Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax. Lately, though, the junior cir- cuit bas been corralling its share of young stars, a point which is becoming evident in the current World Series. True, Baltimore Orioles don't have a young Mantle, but Jim Palmer looked like a seasoned veteran in outpitching Sandy Koufax Thursday. And his bat- terymate, Andy Etchebarren, has the full confidence of man- ager Hank Bauer. While most of the attention has been on Palmer and Etche- barren, however, you can't overlook the fine play of rookie second baseman Dave Johnson, Originally a shortstop, John- son, who bears a resemblance facially to Cleveland's Rocky Colavito, wasted little time in grabbing the second base posi- tion away from all-star Jerry Adair last spring. All Adair had | gone in 1906 was. establish : a | twice a batting champion and | sters 5 such as Curt Blefary, John neignig iecora for sackers. er, and hit with more author- ity, thus making Adair expend- able. For him, Orioles obtained relief pitcher Eddie Fisher, which was a bonus for them, Palmer, Johnson and Etche- barren are only a few of the younger stars in the American League. Every club has one, two or three, and several could go on to achieve greatness. Cleveland has pitcher Sammy McDowell, who some say is faster than Koufax. Minnesota has Tony Oliva, a runner-up this year, nis tira jin the majors, Chicago White my Agee, while Detroit offers Jim Northrup, Mickey Stanley, Willie Horton, Bill Freehan, Denny McLain and Mickey Lo- lich. California offers Jim Fregosi and Rick Reichardt, while the Yankees expect big things from Mel Stottlemyre and Tommy Tresh, although both have been around for a few years, Boston has high hopes for Carl Yastrzemski, Tony Coni- gliaro and Joe Foy while Wash- ington says catcher Paul Casa- nova is their lone "untouch- able" when it comes to trading. Baltimore also expects young- enfin.
