Begone! 41, Share =s -- Senden, Ines 1966, reer. YES!OLD FLOUNDER-| HEAD IS IN HIS USUAL SHOUTING RUSH FOR SR Re RS He RY Hae weigh all the strong and weak points of the hand, assess his various prospects, and lay plans to give - himself the best chance uf mak- ing the contract. Since the outcome of the hand often depends on how the de- fenders' cards are divided, he should give heavy consideration rd dealing with every possibil- ty. He must pay heed to not only the normal distribution of the outstanding cards but the ab- normal as well, What he should especially try to do is shape the play so that he can make the contract if the cards are normally divided, and also make the contract if they are abnormally divided. Here is an example of this two-way view. South starts the play with eight high-card tricks, and his only real chance of de- veloping a ninth lies in clubs, But if, after winning the dia- mond lead, he cashes the A-K of clubs in the expectation of finding the normal 3-2 division, he winds up taking his four aces and four kings and goes down one. His proper play, after win- ning the ace of clubs in dum- erat asa eee wa @ jack. \y guar- antees the contract regardless of how the clubs are divided. Take the actual case first, If East takes the queen, South now has four club tricks where formerly there were two. Of if East follows low and permits the jack to win, South still makes four club tricks by continuing the suit. if it turns out that West has the Q-10-x-x- of clubs, he alse cannot make more than one club trick. So, in all eases, if the clubs are 4-1, South makes ten tricks. At the same time, °this method of play assures ten tricks if it turns out that the clubs are divided 3-2, YOUR HEALTH Reducing Diet Food Can Put On Weight By JOSEPH G. MOLNER, MD Dear Dr. Molner: I am'under- weight and trying to gain. Every magazine I pick up has an ar- ticle on how to lose, and lists low calorie meals. I suppose the simple answer is to eat high calorie foods, rich desserts, etc. However, I don't have a taste for them. I like a few sweets in moderation. I am gaining, but slowly. I have no physical disorders. My main complaint is that it takes so long to gain, Are more fre- quent small meals better than the regular normal ones? I eat three a day plus snacks. -- Mrs. C, Stick to the three meals plus snacks. You've got your finger on the main point: appetite. People with big appetites gain; folks with small appetites don't. Here's one suggestion. You know about these liquid reduc- ing diets that come in cans. They are much used by dieters because, although they contain a fixed number of calories, they also have protein, minerals and vitamins. The canned diets weren't in- vented originally for overweight folks, but for invalids who couldn't or didn't want to eat much, The idea was to make it easy for them to consume basic nourishment. Try taking this mixture each day in addition to your three regular meals. That will pro- vide extra calories that you can instead of trying to force down more food or desserts. When you reach whatever weight you desire, it will be simple to stop this liquid sup- plement without a change in your eating habits in general. Dear Dr. Molner: Regarding varicose veins, is an operation such as tripping the veins dan- gerous? What about subsequent infection and having to have a leg cut off?--Mrs. R. H. You are a worry wart, aren't you? Stripping (or tying) vari- cose veins ranks as a safe oper- ation. For one thing, the sur- gery is fairly close to the sur- face, and in any event does not involve going into the chest, peritoneum or other such area. There is danger of infection in any operation (even picking a splinter out of your thumb with a needle) unless suitable precautions are taken. That's why sterile conditions are nec- essary and surgeons spend as much as half an hour scrubbing up before an operation. There's more danger of infec- tion in not having varicose veins removed than there is in removing them, because poor circulation resulting from vari- cosity gives any small infection a big head start. That's why, for example, ulcers on the lower legs are so difficult to heal if you have varicose veins. Dear Dr. Molmer: I am 19 and for four years have had severe cramps during my monthly pe- riods. I know that many have cramps, but I am worried by dizzy spells -- my vision goes black and my head feels heavy and numb. I have. tried taking iron Pa but they don't help.-- M. C. Tron pills aren't the answer. Relaxants, diuretic drugs and sometimes other medications often bring relief. A problem as severe as yours warrants con- sulting your doctor.
