BE MORE HUMANE In order to be more humane to herself and to the pupil and student, and to get most desir- able results, the homework as- signed for an evening should hardly require more than 15 or 30 minutes to do. If such were adhered to, most written home assignments would be cut to one-fifth or one- tenth of their present length. In the elementary grades the most prevalent assignment, perhaps is that of drill problems in arithmetic. School books in arithmetic usually have an abundance of such which are easy for the teacher to assign. Of all wasteful assignments, this, I think, ranks foremost. , When it comes to writing themes, as in junior and senior high schools and college, the requirement more often is a 1,000 words than 250, I recall a writing assignment I had in secondary school. It was to be 800 words. When I finished it I had only about 700 words. How I worried over the other 100 words. A better plan would be to set an upper limit--not more than 200 words or not more than 500, implying they well might number far fewer. Then the student might strive harder for quality than for quantity.
