BOGE AREY aegis Role Of Conciliation Taken By Pearson Over Rhodesia By HAROLD MORRISON Canadian Press Staff Writer African delegates to this 'week's Commonwealth confer- ence in London had looked to Prime Minister Pearson of Can- ada to help ignite the flame that would finally destroy the rebel regime of Rhodesia's lan Smith. But Pearson would have none of it. In his speech to the confer- ence Friday, Pearson took the role of conciliator and fence-- atraddler. "He wanted to see the pace of Britain's actions against Rhode- sia, ruled by a minority white government, move just a little faster. And he wanted to mod- erate the fiery ambitions of Af- ZiTaaS Gi ne stil kcep mem ia tare Commonwealth. The big issues are mandatory United Nations sanctions and no independence without major- ity rule. On both these issues Pearson has expressed caution and moderation. The world is well aware that South Africa won't abide by ap- desia. If the United Nations should order her to do so, the result may be punitive UN measures in which Britain's vi- tal exports te South Africa would suffer. In. the Canadian view, the Commonwealth should perhaps take a closer look at the pos- sibility of a few selective UN sanctions, perhaps on oil and similar basic products, but Pearson hasn't backed any hard-and-fast demand. As for majority rule, this would mean that every adult in Rhodesia would get the vote, regardless of education, civic training and the ability to tell the difference between one po- litical party and another. The result could be poiiticai |) chaos. It is a question whether the Rhodesian blacks are in a position to establish and main- tain a stable government. If.not, there is another question of time, measured in years, needed to bring the Rhodesian majority into a position where it could provide such govern- ment. peals to cut off trade with Rho- BOOK NOW For...
