First planned about 30 years ago, Dierdre was broadcast after the Second World War and had its stage premiere in 1964; by students of Toronto's Royal Conservatory opera school. It is "'by far my best work," says the 85-year-old choir- master and composer. The story of Dierdre is one of the.oldest Irish legends, often retold by poets but sel- dom by musicians. Dr. Willan and John Coulter, an Irish writer living in Toronto, have been improving their version on and off since their first collaboration in the 1930s. The other "daring" produc- tion of the 1966 season will be Verdi's Macbeth, announced COC director Herman Geiger- Torel. This massive work re- quires a troupe of dancers from the National Ballet and was chosen over several Wag- ner operas so as to relieve the burden on the chorus. The remainder of the pro- gram for the 344-week season in Toronto's O'Keefe Centre will be Verdi's La Traviata, Gounoud's Faust, and "Cav SHOW TIMES NEW ODEON -- Started last Thursday until next Wednesday "Boy Did I Get a Wrong Num- ber".
